Would you go to Australia? |
My husband and I are looking for places to go for our Honeymoon in June of 2010. (We have to do our honeymoon later because he was in the military and I have school) We are also planning for the trip now so we can have it well payed off by the time we go.
He mentioned wanting to go to Australia but every time I watch like Animal Planet or Discovery Channel on Specials about crazy deadly insects...they are all in Australia! LOL
I mean no offense to people from Australia, it is a beautiful place, but I am afraid I am going to be bitten or see a lot of bugs and things I have never seen before.
I know I probably sound like a baby, so no rude comments please. I had a horrible experience as a child with ants.
So my question is, have you ever been or would you go?? This would be our Honeymoon so is it romantic?
ALSO! We both are certified Scuba Diver's so we want to go somewhere we can Scuba and I do know Australia is perfect for that but where else?
Thanks in advance! |

I live in Australia and I have never been bitten by a crazy deadly insect. there are plenty of places in Australia that would be great for a honeymoon. if you like scuba diving, then you could go to the great barrier reef or ningaloo reef (also insects cant get underwater).
dont worry about animals, all countries have something deadly and you're still alive from wherever you're from. |

The last recorded death in Australia from a spider bite was in 1979. The basic precautions Aussies follow is to not leave shoes or sleeping bags outdoors when you're not using them and wear gloves when gardening or poking about in old sheds etc.
Snake bite deaths do occasionally happen, but they are nearly always when the person is trying to handle or kill the snake, and alcohol is frequently involved. If by some obscure chance you do see one just leave it alone. Wear shoes and socks when bushwalking. Snakes are extremely shy.
The most dangerous animal in Australia is the European honey bee which causes 10 deaths per year.
Australia is a beautiful place and extremely romantic. Consider one of the Whitsunday Islands (more peaceful) or Port Douglas (more activities) for a fabulous romantic holiday that includes diving. June is the perfect time for Port Douglas in particular - it's warm and balmy, and you can dive in the Great Barrier Reef. Really, you'll love it. |

Stop watching those documentaries! Australia is no worse in terms of creatures then the US.
We do get ants, but you can usually avoid them. Household spiders are harmless and never seen a snake outside a zoo. The worst creatures you won't be going anywhere near. Obviously if the extent was as they make out on those shows, Australia would be inhabitable and we would all be dead.
I would strongly suggest heading out to the islands off the QLD coast. June is winter in Australia and while it doesn't get freezing the islands are warm all year round. June is the dry season and there are plenty of places to go diving.
Perhaps Hamilton Island would be a good starting point, I recently went to a wedding there and it was beautiful, very romantic.
Congrats on the wedding. |

Hi Hillary,
I am living here with all those bugs and hey, 2 days ago i found a redback spider in my back yard! There's nothing to be scared of, just read about the dangerous things here:
http://www.gondwananet.com/australia-facts-dangers-and-road-distances.html
Romantic honeymoon and scuba diving combined, i would recommend Whitsundays:
http://www.gondwananet.com/australia-facts-queensland-whitsunday-islands.html
There's scuba diving in Airlie Beach. |

I don't know how to answer all your questions but I would just like to say that I am the biggest scaredy cat - even afraid of ants - and I live in Australia but I am still living! I have never been bitten by any type of weird insect or been bitten by a spider either. I am sure you would love it :) |

The vast majority of people living in Australia, never have a problem with the "crazy deadly insects" there. Unless you plan to go hiking in the Outback, I wouldn't worry about it.
If you really want a nice getaway, head for the Blue Mountains.

Australia is a fantastic place to go. It's like here in the US. Easy to travel, do things, shop, currency exchange, rent cars (remember to drive on the other side), convenience stores, retaurants, - name it you will not be dissapointed. As far as your concern about bugs - it will be no more than swatting at few flies duting the month you are going. If I would want to live some where other than US - Australia will be my first choice. I have relatives living in Adelaide for 35+ years. June is there winter time - Northern Australia is closer to the Equator and generally warmer, Southern Autralia will be cooler. It's a very large country.
You are Certified Scuba Divers - You at the top destination for Scuba Diving. Very Popular access to Great Barrier Reef from Cairns, city North East Australia. The Great Barrier Reef in an Ultimate World Destination for Scuba Divers. Lots of Animals Underwater, and they get very large. Excellent Visibility, Rich Coral Reef - absolutely breath taking Underwater Experience. I did my Scuba Diving there in December - summer time - and it was very hot and a bit rainy. I am told June is a better time of the year to visit the reef.
You can get flights to Cairns from any major city in Australia (Qantas Airlines). You can purchase visit Australia Plane tickets from here in US (not in Australia) with great discounts for a number of cities 4 or 5 - your choice. If you go to Cairns - you can hook up with a Scuba Diving Shop, and set up your Barrier Reef Trip. You can do day trip, or you can go on a Live Aboard for 3 days or so - your choice. The Barrier Reef is about 60 miles off shore.
From Cairns you can access a great national park & forest with a cable car, and some hiking called Kuranda National Forest - take the tourist bus. In Cairns we stayed at Righa International ( Can't remember the exact name) - Great place to stay. Visit the gorgeous Gold Coast around the City of Brisbane - beaches & resorts. From the Northern part of the Gold Coast you can also access the Southern parts of the Barrier Reef (I have not done this - you have to check)
Finally - don't worry about bugs - you will be visiting a highly developed, advanced country with all things you do here pretty much avilable to you here. You will find - maked price on anything you buy is what you pay (so additional sales tax), No tips at any restaurants. Great Sea Food if you like it, Wonderful Wild Life if you choose to seek that out as part of your visit.
Happy trip to Australia
If you like to some close to US - hit the Caribbean Islands - abosolutely great Scuba Diving. Always warm. Here are some destinations I have been to - St. Maarten, St Thomas, Tortola, Saba, Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac, Barbados, Bequia, St. Vincent, Tobago, Bahamas, and there are many other destinations.
Finally in the US go Hawaii - The Big Island - Kona Coast Scuba Diving is fantastic. Fly to Kona (Airport Code KOA). Look up Kohala Divers - see Rebecca - mention my name KIP - she will take care of you fro your Scuba Diving - great shop, great people. |

LOL!
Yes you are right there are lots of dangerous species in Australia. Funnel Web Spiders, Box Jelly Fish, Sharks, you name it.
I travelled around Oz for 7 months and survived.
In all seriousness the chances are of anything bad happening and seeing the dangerous species are slim to none. In fact most spiders and snakes would run a mile for the sound of hearing you so you've got nothing to worry about.
A lot of people would say scuba dive Great Barrier Reef in Aus - which is off the north east coast of Aus. There are jelly fish present in the waters in the summer Nov - April, but you will be fine cos you'll be in a stinger / diver suit - so no chance of getting stung.
Other great places to Scuba - options are endless, ones that spring to mind - Fiji, Thailand (Cheapest place to learn to dive in the world apparently), Egypt, New Zealand, Ningaloo Reef (west coast Australia) |

Yes there are many deadly insects there but that is just if your going into the desert parts and jungle but if you stay by the coast like new south whales, sydney or queensland. Im not saying that the water is safe too. The are many jellyfish. Sharks and Crocidiles. One of the most poisinus jellyfish is iroconji or how ever you spell it. but i know its the deadlyest. and its as big as your fingernail but VERY long tentacles. There is hawaii too but hawaii same thing about the jellyfish.
Putuer rico. oh lets face it every were they have jellyfish!
Mexico
Ecuador
Costa Rica
Bahamas
Argentina
Tobago
Jamaica
Australia
Hawaii
These are some of the best also.
I REALLY HOPE THIS HELPS! |
