Melbourne. When I get to the airport in Sydney it's so unwelcoming. I climbed the Sydney bridge and that didn't do it for me. I don't see the big deal. Melbourne just has the right feel. |

Neither, too much stress, too much time commuting, too much boring same old same old suburbs.

I'm a Melbournian, and unlike my friends, I like Sydney...but I wouldn't live there. The only thing Sydney has over Melbourne is the quick access to the surf beaches from the city.
You have to drive hours from Melbourne to get to a surf beach - however they are among the best surf in the world.
Margaret River in WA has great surf, and watching the sun set on the ocean is lovely, but Perth is far too small to be called a real city :P
If I could draw a personal comparison I would say that Sydney is to London as Melbourne is to Paris
(minus the fashion that is...Australia is a good decade behind the rest of the world) |

I've lived in both (now live in Brisbane) and Melbourne wins hands down. It's a brilliant place with heaps to do, hundreds of brilliant restaurants, great public transport, the best sport and major events in the country, the best shopping and I just love the CBD. If you've never been there or if you love it like I do, watch this: http://www.streetfilms.org/archives/melbourne/ |

I'd prefer to live in the west as I was born here. Sunsets over the ocean everynight of the year too. |

Sydney. "In sleep he sang to me,
in dreams he came ...
that voice which calls to me and speaks my name ..."
... well they wouldn't sing that but... |

Sydney, the amount of prejudice from Melbournians really turns me off. That and I'm an NRL fan not an AFL fan and the Storm don't do it for me.
I love visiting Melbourne though and try to go at least once a year.
To be honest, I wouldn't live in Sydney either, I prefer the suburbs or where I live in the Illawarra, still close enough but away from the everyday hustle and bustle. |
