Would you move to Oz if you had the chance? UK members only!?

My hubbie and i are looking into moving to Australia. We don't know for certain if we'll qualify, but i'm a bit nervous. Would you move there if you could?

Timmy!
I got my permanent residency visa this week, after a long application process. I've been to Oz a few times on holiday and loved it, it has everything that's good about Britain (which isn't much), and none of the crap plus much better weather. Go there for a holiday first if you haven't been before, otherwise you could be making an expensive and tme consuming mistake.
I'm 38 and a joiner, and was 5 points under the requirements for the points test pass mark. However, Western Australia and South Australia offer State Sponsored Immigration, which is where they sponsor your application if your profession is on the Occupations In Demand list (find it on www.immi.gov.au). This means you bypass the points test, and once you've had your skills assessed by Trades Recognition Australia, you can apply for a permanent residency visa. You have to stay in which of the two states you choose for a minimum of 2 years. I would wholeheartedly recommend using a migration agent; they aren't cheap but they do make the process much easier. I used Concept Australia in my home town of Manchester. The two directors were consular officers at the Aussie Embassy here till it closed in 1996, so there s nothing they don't know about getting to Oz. They'll give you an honest appraisal of your chances of getting a visa, and they won't bullshit you, which a lot of agents do.
I can't wait to get over there, this country has had it. Crime,traffic,pollution,taxes,astronomic... property prices and cost of living, crap weather, overpopulation, chavs and hoodies taking over....what a shithole. I've travelled all over the world, and so far this is the most dangerous country I've ever been outside the USA. I've worked hard to try and make a life for myself here but anything you do manage to accrue either gets stolen or taxed.

Like a shot! If you or your hubby have a trade i.e.plumber/joiner/nurse/doctor then you'll be welcomed with open arms by their Government.I'm trying to convince my brother to go,not that I want to get rid of him but I'm convinced he'd have a much better standard of life there. He qualified as a plumber about 12 months ago.

I think I would like to, although I am scared of spiders, so that is putting me off. I know Adelaide is open to immigrants at the moment. UK is really going the down the pan at the moment, so maybe we could earn twice as much and pay half as much somewhere else, I'm more tempted with Canada though...
The only thing really putting me off is depriving the kids of their grandparents and vice-versa. Maybe when they have passed on?
Good luck if you go for it!

Some family friends moved there about 4 years ago. at first they really struggled there - everything was different, and their children found their education was disrupted because everything was taught differently there. But now they love it, the whole family, and they don't want to return to england.

I'd say that if you have the chance, take it. I would love to go and experiance somewhere different to England. Go for it!

Oh yes, we've been to Australia twice this year for holidays and I would emigrate there at the drop of a hat, the cost of living is much better than the UK, the houses are fantastic and so much cheaper and you get a heck of a lot more for your money too, the Australians are wonderful people, very friendly and so laid back, I love the place but unfortunately for us were too old to emigrate otherwise I would be there now.

Rachel
id move to NZ, less creepy crawlies, hotter than the UK and easier to vist OZ.

What you are looking for here is not a type of poll result, that you will go or stay on!
You are looking for reassurance that you are doing the right thing. (or not)!
Sorry but you wont get that here, you will get the honest opinion of folks in general, that should mean nothing to you.
You are individuals, you make up your own minds (sod what the rest may think)!
OK you are asking for opinions?
Here is mine, (and it's worth no more or less than anyone Else's)!
I have a couple of Daughters moved to Spain, they both had some hassle to start with but now they are both OK and settled, no way would either of them return to the UK.
I also have an ancient wife, (I must really think about swapping her for a new model soon)!!
We moved on my retirement , not out of the UK, she wouldnt have any of that!
Out of the UK into the sun, who wants any of that?
So just a few hundred miles up the road, guess what? Home sick miss family and friends, etc etc!!
We are back where we started from, but now it's Grand kids she is missing!! And the neighbourhood ?
I can only suggest if youn are BOTH for sure in agreement then go for it!!
And good luck to the pair of you.

I don't know... I've never been to Australia. I have a friend who was there for her holiday with her family and she and her family loved it so much they didn't want to leave but as there are no job opportunities there for her husband, they can't move there.

Another of my friends is moving there next September and is sorting out visas etc. She knows a lot of people over there and her boyfriend is Australian. She first went there for a holiday and persuaded her family to go there last Xmas for a holiday, they loved it so much they are all moving there next year. I'm planning on visiting them after they have settled in, you never know, I might decide I like Australia too!

Definatly, I went to Melbourne in Aus for 3 weeks and it wasn't nearly long enough!
We are going to a seminar in Manchester on Sunday about moving to Australia, if you are close why don't you look into it. The website to get tickets is thinkingaustralia.

Good luck hope it works out for you x

Duck
Well it would be great to spend the winter months there.

Yes in a heartbeat! its a massive jump for you both to take so its completely understandable that you are feeling nervous. its the unknown! it will take a while to adjust, but the beautiful people, weather and landscape will all play a helping hand. your only a flight away, you only get one shot at things so make the most of everything you get the chance to do! best of luck x

No! I'm sure the Antipodes are very nice, but I love England. I got homesick on a day trip to Calais!

Not Oz, NZ.

Less poisonous creatures as stated elsewhere, and more countryside (I don't count the desolation of the outback as countyside - that's desert.)

Funny enough have just been looking at places to emigrate to today.

My family would def. not want to go. However, we have friends who moved there 20 years ago and really found it hard at first. Now they consider themselves Australians and have turned their back well and truly on Britain. I do agree with Michael B's comment that Australians are loud and arrogant = needless to say my friends husband has cloned himself. So bear in mind when returning to UK, when people start making excuses why they don't want you to stay its because you've turned into one of them.

When I think of the Australians I have met, no way. They're bad enough in small doses. Who wants to live in a whole country of mannerless whinging bigmouths?

New Zealand might tempt me, though, if only they'd lose their obsession with rugby. Most NZs I've bumped into are fine.
