Would you send a meal back in a restaurant now?

A couple who had a meal at the Coogee Bay Hotel say there was human excrement in the bottom of their ice cream sundae.
http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2008/10/29/2404835.htm

If I find something wrong with my meal now do I have the right to not pay for it? I certainly don't want to send it back into the kitchen to be contaminated.

What would you do?

You're joking, right? That's what started all this trouble in the first place.

You bet your sweet 'bippy', I'ld send it back!

ESPECIALLY if I found "human excrement" in the bottom of my 'desert'! But, at THAT time, my 'desire' for 'desert' would be GONE! Pay for it? NO WAY!!!

As for sending a 'steak' back, that was either TOO well done, or not done 'well-enough'! ??? TO ME, that's the BIGGEST problem "I" have ever had! I like to TELL the waitress (waiter) who takes my order... just how I WANT my steak! (Err on the UNDER-done side - I don't want my steak so 'WELL-DONE', that it's CRISP) So, if they have to stick it back on the 'fire' for a few minutes, it's usually NOT a big deal...!

I DO understand your concern... Here's MY advice:

I guess, first, I would AVOID "THAT" place!!!

Next, I don't KNOW how it would GO, but if you are worried about your food being 'contaminted', if you send it BACK, I would think about 'LEAVING'... instead of worrying about it being 'contaminated'! (Make sure you TELL someone that you prefer to LEAVE, instead of taking that 'risk' - so they don't come after you for NOT paying the bill!!!)

Finally, if THAT thought (about 'contamination') is PROMINENT in your mind... then consider either going ONLY to a place where you can WATCH them cook your food, 'before your very eyes', or (sad to say) do NOT go OUT to eat!

Stupidity Leak
If you send it back saying 'it tastes like sh!t', then I think thats exactly what you will get.
I think I will always cook my own meals from now on.

There is something very dodgy about this whole story, IMO.

No, I don't ever send meals back.
If it's not edible the first time around why would sending it back to the kitchen make it any better.
(You know after the first bite or two whether it's edible or not. You don't eat almost the entire meal and then say it was inedible and demand a refund. That's just wrong.)
I prefer to ask for my money back, which I've rarely had to do I must say.

Working in hospitality (as I do), you always have the right to send back a meal if you feel there is something wrong with it (ie you ordered a rare steak and it's well done). However, sending back a meal simply because you don't like the presentation or the taste is not acceptable.

As for the Coogee Bay Hotel incident - I find the whole thing a bit dubious. JMO

I do not know if this story is the real deal, but I work with food and anyone has the right to send a meal back if they are not happy with it. You have the option of getting your money back, even if it is half eaten, or a replacement meal. Most places in Aus are really respectable, and the high hygiene levels that you need to deal with food are not that hard to achieve.

Well, the food at the CBH was pretty cruddy to start with! If there's a grub on your lettuce, or the meal's not what you ordered I'd most definitely send it back. I've worked in hospitality a long time and it gets really annoying when people order something without reading the menu properly and then complain "it's not what they expected" and try to get out of the bill or get a replacement meal. No professional chef would contaminate a meal because they buggered it up in the first place! Food handling standards are pretty high in Australia. I'd be more worried about fast food joints that are staffed by unprofessional 16 year olds who'll do anything for a laugh. I've heard a lot more stories about those sorts of places than respectable restaurants!

phunkprincess
If it was not what i'd ordered I would probably let someone know that it was wrong but I don't think I would send it back if it wasn't that bad. Say if their was a hair in my food etc then most definitely would send it back for a refund!

veg_hel
I think it is the way that a complaint is handled. There is no room for being rude and impolite in hospitality. I also think that the payment issue is debatable. The right thing for a restaurant to compensate would be to either discount the bill, replace the meal or give something complimentary such as a dessert. Not paying for a meal is really not fair and should only occur when the restaurant offers this option.

As long as you are friendly there is nothing wrong with sending a meal back. I do it when I deem the food not edible such as too much salt in a salad, completely melted ice cream, lasagna still frozen in the middle. I have always had the agreement of the waiter when I have complained. I guess you need to choose your restaurants wisely.

Coogee Bay Hotel is probably not the best place to eat in the first place.
