Your perspective on Australia ?

Hey guys just interested on your perspective of Australia. Do you think its a country full of Kangaroo's and that everyone says "strewth" Or do you see it in another light?

What do you think on the Australian population in general?

Good and bad welcome!

Thanks!

Additional Details
I live in Australia. Im only asking because many people i have met from overseas believe there to be animals everywhere and they think Australians say things such as "mate"adn strewth all the time!

if there's a place i would like to spend the rest of my life,it would be here in Australia. i am from the Philippines but the warmth and the politeness of the people here have always pulled me to stay here. aside from of course, the opportunities here are better. i also like the fact that i could have the best of both worlds - living in an industrialized country where everything functions well and having nature beside you at all times.

I've lived in australia for 21 years, and I feel so lucky to be able to call this place home.
We have our problems with the governments and there are always issues with the aboriginal population, but compared to alot of other countries it rocks.
There are nice beaches and amazing things to do, and the wild life is amazing and unique. The people are friendly and the beer is damn fine.

The only downside to living in australia is that it's so far away from the rest of the world.
But that's also a good thing.

We also awesome support of the arts scene and music.
triple j is the best radio station in the world. Governmen funded, non-commercial.
awesome.

I love Australia. I've only been once, but have always wanted to live there. I'm an American who knows that kangaroos don't freely roam the streets! I know koalas aren't found in the trees of your backyard - unless you live across from Koala Park, and one has found a way out again! But then, I'm an American who has left the 5 mile radius of where I was born, and I read.

I didn't hear a lot of "mate" just "g'day, how're you going." I thought everyone was very friendly and laid back. I only got to see Sydney, Melbourne, and Wagga Wagga, but they were all beautiful. Australia seems to struggle with a couple similar problems that the US struggles with - native people's rights, roles, and stereotypes versus the European population that came in, for instance.

I loved it. I felt instantly at peace, comfortable, and like I belonged. I've only ever felt that way about one other place - NYC.

I do want to know what's up though with you guys hogging all the tall, curly-haired, gorgeous men. You seem to have more than your fair share, and I'd like you to please spread the wealth! :~)

When specific things stand out about a country, they end up as the icons or clichés that everyone jokes about.

For example, Canadians don't have grisly bears running around the city streets and people don't live in igloos (except in the far north). And it also doesn't snow like crazy in EVERY part of Canada (ie Vancouver), yet people still make jokes about these things and constantly ask travelling Canadians about these things.

I have lived in Australia for 8 years, and every time I visit Canada I always get the same questions about kids riding kangaroos to school, etc. At the moment, I live in a house really close to a conservation park, and I literally have kangaroos on my street most nights, so I can almost answer the 'do you have kangaroos in your backyard?' question in the affirmative. Almost. I live on the Gold Coast.

I really like Australians. They are easy to get along with and laid back. I would have returned to Canada permanently if I didn't like it here :)

Well I'm from Australia (Queensland actually) and I have to admit myself and the people I hang around say all those words! I know it's kind of like -- weird, but we do. And we say stuff like "what's that got to do with the price of eggs in china," or "you can shove that up your brass rarzoo," etc etc. But I don't care what anyone thinks of my home, I love it, I think it's the best country in the world (of course I've never been to any other country lol) and I'm proud to be an Aussie.

Who cares if people think I'm the kind of Aussie who drapes the flag over my shoulders on Australia Day. I am one and I'm proud to be!

The older generation of my family DO say 'mate' all the time, but (sadly) none of us ride kangaroos!

Cheers cobber :-)

Lived here for nearly 7 years and if you are referring to Steve Irwin - he is the only one I have ever heard mainly say strewth else it is heard if something is quite bad. You see Kangaroos out of the cities. And is the cat food in shops as well as on the menu in supermarkets...

Australia. In my honest opinion, it seems to be a nice place! The sun, the sand, the beaches, the amazing zoos, the AWESOME theme parks! I'm a kiwi, so I am seriously looking forward to having a holiday there. Are there any animals there apart from snakes and sharks that can hurt people I should know about?

The following things are facts for me:-

- Myself and many of my Aussie friends do say "Mate", "Crikey" and "Fair Dinkum." Including women.

- We've had about 4 pet Kangaroos over the years. They are easy to house train actually. Obviously you are going to see less and less animals the deeper you get into cities.

I think we are far less of a prisoner to things like Political Correctness than other western countries (thank goodness)

That's about all I can think of for now. I was born and raised in Tasmania by the way.
