It's is a dark brown, savoury food paste made from yeast extract, used mainly as a spread on sandwiches and toast, as well as a filling of pastries like Cheesymite scroll, in Australia and New Zealand.

It is similar to British Marmite, New Zealand Marmite and Swiss Cenovis.

You only spread vegemite very thinnly on your bread/toast.

The taste may be described as salty, slightly bitter, and malty - somewhat similar to the taste of beef bouillon. The texture is smooth and sticky,

It is what has made our nation great and has put a rose in every cheek.

I think you will find all the info you need over here:
http://www.vegemite.com.au

Simply put - you either love it or hate it - there is no inbetween

Vegemite (and its english cousin, Marmite) are extracts of vegetables and brewers yeast that are usually spread on bread.

They are something of an acquired taste. I happen to adore the stuff but they are so pungent that my wife will leave the room when I open up the jar.

Here is the Vegemite website: http://www.vegemite.com.au/

Vegemite is yum

tentofield
It is a by-product of beer. Brewers yeast that has been used to make beer can be turned into vegemite. There are no meat products in vegemite and you either love it or hate it. Only wusses spread it thinly. It is best spread thickly on a buttered Vitawheat. Put another Vitawheat on the top and squeeze so worms of butter and vegemite squirm out of the holes.

A friend of mine is not a great vegemite eater and he had a jar that went past its use-by date - a thing unheard of in normal society :o)

Please do not believe that vegemite is made from vegetables. It is not. Take your answers from Australians. It is made from yeast and is a dark coloured spread that you put on bread, toast, crumpets and almost anything else. It is loaded with vitamin b from the yeast and most Aussies eat it. It has a very distinct flavour that cannot really be described. You just have to try some. It is good tucker.

Not only can Vegemite be spread on toast etc. It can also be used to add flavour to soups and stews (casseroles).

Personally, I much prefer Promite, similar taste but sweeter :)

But Why??
Vegemite is what the council fill in pot holes with here. It is aslo a popular spread on sandwiches. I have it on everything. If you dont like Vegemite, then go home!!!

?
it's like a paste made of a lot of veggies and they put it on toast .... i'm not australian but i have lots of australian friends
