Southern germans are really nice, open minded, warm so on I love Bayern, Baden Wurtemburg, Austria (even if they are not german citizen but they have more or less the same culture as Bayern) .
Northern germans are really rude, arrogant, narrow minded think that they are better than anyone else. |

I asked myself if I could give you an unbiased reply, having an Austrian wife, a numerous German branch in the family, and having lived 2 years in Vienna, nine in Hamburg and four in Frankfurt. Considering this combination, I think I can help you. “Austrian and German” cannot be considered a status that makes you “friendlier” or not. In Hamburg we made so many friends, were ushered, spontaneously, into so many clubs, we had hardly a free minute. An yet the very same Hamburgers consider themselves “cool, distant and very correct”. We loved our two years in Vienna, but made hardly any friends, because, after Hamburg, we found the average rather stuck up and definitely cold shouldered, especially to my wife, who is from Carinthia, the “land of Friends” (ancient name being Karantane). What annoyed us most was the artificial “attention” we got when they stumbled on my title. Ever the snobs of a typical capital of an ex Empire. So what verdict can I give you? If you are a tourist you’ll be made to feel at home in the towns used to tourism, like Vienna, Salzburg, Munich. Berlin and even Hamburg. Less in Frankfurt, where everybody is rushing around, “making money”. If you intend settling down you’ll find a warmer atmosphere in the South of each country, but true friends in the most unlikely places. So my conclusion is: on the surface, friendlier in the South of Germany and Austria, deep down, it’s anybody’s guess, but in the North they tend to be less superficial and more transparent. The Germans say "schlicht". The Viennese "charme", definitely there but very skin deep.
Edit: reply to your bottom line - are Austrians friendlier than Germans? On average yes. But don't take the Viennese at face value. |

It's like anywhere; depends on the situation and the random people you happen to meet. It's not really fair or smart to "generalize" a whole country of people. Based on my personal experience over the many years I've lived here (and partially in Germany as well), I find Austrians are more friendlier than Germans. Now - before anyone reems on me later - I did state I'm basing my comment on my own personal experience of living here and all of the experiences I've personally had over the years. As we know, everyone's own experiences are different and their own. I will also say, though, that I find both Austrians and Germans more "reserved" when it comes to foreigners and people they don't know and that might give the impression of rudeness or arrogance. |
