I don't believe there are many living there. According to the 2001 census, of the 710,926 foreign nationals living in Austria, only 5,677 were Italians. (see Wikipedia link below for more details) The data is though a little old.
However, I've been to Austria a couple of times, I have friends there and I have never heard Italian (not even in the summer time when the country is invaded by tourists)
On the other hand, both Austria and Italy are EU countries, therefore people can travel from one place to another easily, so it's pretty hard to get clear statistics on what you need. |

im guessing there probably are. I know that some areas on the border speak both languages etc, there must be a fair few because of the EU laws on freedom of movement etc. All EU nationals can move freely throughout all member nations |

Yes and no. There are a lot of business owners here who spend half the year (march-nov)here and the other half in italy. any italians who stay are a definite minority. and yes most of them are likely in vienna. |

there are likely less Italians in Austria than in in New York.
It's a small country and people in Europe tend not to move around as we do here.
Since Austria shares a border with Italy, many people on both sides speak each others language, and you will have no trouble finding Austrians which are fluent in more than three or four languages.
Serbia-Montenegro, Turkey and Germany are the countries which provide the most significant numbers of immigrants to Austria. Italy hardly shows up on the statistics. |

There are many, but most of them live in Vienna. |

Very interesting and different answers! First of all, definitely NOT a majority in Austria. That first poster definitely has it wrong there. There are Italians here and while they are few and far between, it isn't as "rare" as Danny199 would have you think. The one thing that is not true is the statement that many Austrians are fluent in three or four languages. That's a load of bull. They learn languages in school but not at a very high level (I know because I have kids in the Gymnasium system here in Austria and am shocked that their level of learning isn't that advanced as others would lead you to believe). I find many Austrians are terrified of having to use a foreign language and don't feel comfortable doing so. When they speak it, they don't speak it very well; they know enough to get by.
In answer to your question, there are Italians here and those Wiki statistics mentioned are about right.

No! Most of the foreigners are Turkish, you rarely see Italians over there!
There are even more Serbians than Italians.
Italy is a more beautiful country and the people are much nicer in Italy than in Austria, so why would they wanna move to Austria? |
