Most Americans are isolationists, and really don't care about what's going on in the rest of the world. Most Americans don't know enough geography to know cities and states in their own country and the majority of them couldn't even find Austria or Australia on a map. Its really a shame when foreigners know more about the US than its own citizens.

Because LaudaAir flies between the two perhaps? More annoyingly a lot of people don't realise that Austria is German-speaking and not French-speaking when I go back to Britain!!!

You already answered your question. Australia is just Austria with two letters added, so it's understandable that some people might confuse them.
