DIY Sound of Music tour in Salzburg?

I am heading to Salzburg and want to see some of film locations from 'The Sound of Music'. I know there are organised tours where you can see various locations but I'm not a big fan of such tours. I have found lists of the various locations in Salzburg that were used and was hoping to see some on my own. Has anyone done this on their own before?

While some locations like the Residenz Square and Fountain and the Mirabell Gradens are obviously open to the general public, I was wondering whether the other places like the palace, the convent and pavillion are open to the general public. Anyone know? Also, does anyone know if it is hard to get to the various locations?

You are on the right track by doing it yourself and seeing the things that are in Salzburg proper. The city is not huge and u can go to the castle, the gardens and nunnery areas and pose for pics. I saw them all again when I was there last year. The previous time I went, I took an English-speaking tour and they went to all those places plus to the house they used, the gazebo, the church, which are outside the city. Either way u will enjoy the beautiful city.
