How much does transportation and food in Austria cost ?
Whatever city or town you are from I am interested to know.
Basically I'm planning to come to stay with a host family and attend German courses, but I don't know where about yet. And I've no idea how much money to take with me for things like transport and grocery stores. So if you could give me a glimpse of that in your area, I'd be very thankful!
Probably I will go to Vienna, but that is not yet decided!
Hi.
Public transport in Austria is quite expensive... For citytransport you about at least 1, 70 Euro in one direction...For a ticket for one month you pay about 30Euro.
For train tickets it's about 10Euro for 100km...
A Coffee is about 2,30 Euro...
0.5l auf Coke are about 89 Cents...
Austria is the 13th richest country in the world and a little bit expensive. So take enought money with you!

The Austrian railway company OBB offers reductions to families and also to single passengers. Journeys can then be very cheap, even in the first class. Workdays, and for single passengers prices are higher. Ask at an OBB counter at a railway station.
In the Vienna area the various public transportation providers joined forces. Within their alliance VOR transfers from one means of transportation to another is cheaper. So you can travel with the Vienna metro, a bus and railway comfortably and with just one ticket.
VAT ist higher in Austria (20% for most things, 10% for goods of basic needs).
Telecommunications is very cheap. Meals are much cheaper than in the US, tip is usually 5-10%. Electronics and cameras are more expensive than in other countries.
Remember, that organic food is available in all larger groceries.
