Hi
Not sure what I can add to the previous answer, but my gf and I have just returned from Vienna. I would recommend that you didnt bother with the car hiring at all, especially if the only commuting you will be doing is around the Capital city. The publlic transport section is perfect. Clean, prompt, safe, reliable and almost runs 24 hours a day. When the trams or the underground trains arent running (between 00:30 and 05:30) there are night buses laid on.
Regards to food. The supermarkets appear to be cheaper than the Uk. If looking for places to eat, stay away from the touristy places. Instead look for establishments with "haus" at the end of their name. It means Guest House as a rough translation and are a lot more reasonably priced than the restaurant tourist traps.
Enjoy and feel free to email me with any questions. |

For your car rental, try AutoEurope out of Portland Maine which has excellent rates. For a family of 8, may I suggest a Volkswagen Caravelle with air conditioning although possibly only stick-shift would be available. Very economical even though gas prices up in the $5-6 a gallon (sold in liters, 4 to a gallon). Couple of things you might enjoy would be to take the car train south through the tunnel to Malnitz then drive to Lienz to Highway 111 and go to Obertilliach. I'm spending three nights there with a group and the town looks like 1500-1600's and very quaint. After visiting the town and maybe taking their chair lift to the heights of the Lienzer Dolomites, continue to Kotschach-Mauthen before returning to Badgastein. Also, a day trip across the Grossglockner Alpine Highway is well worth the time and the small toll. By using the same car train, you can make it a round trip without covering the same territory over and back. Lovely area with great scenery. As to costs etc. in Badgastein and environs, I've only been there once some 20 years ago and don't remember a thing. Sorry. |
