Salzburg is located directly at the northern edge of the Alps. Just behind city limits the Alps rise immediately up to 6.000 ft. To the north, the landscape is flat. The best skiing resorts are some 30 miles away. You will have to cross the Alps in order to get from Venice to Salzburg. If you drive, you will probably see not much, since the freeway is located in steep valleys with many tunnels. However if you fly, the views are breathtaking provided your are lucky and there are no clouds. If you take the train, you will see a dirty window and I would recommend taking the night train for that reason.
