The vast majoity of Austrians speak one of many German dialects, which means some German people (or people who learned German at school) have difficulty understanding us speak. Imagine it being like a scottish accent in English.
A minority speak Slovenian, Hungarian and some even Italian I believe.
Many Austrians speak English, but most of them don't very well. Those who do speak it well are usually well-educated Austrians from the main cities (Vienna, Salzburg, Graz, Linz, Innsbruck) or university students, who basically have to be fluent.
Austria is not a poor country at all, in fact it is said that we have the world's 3rd best standard of living in some surveys. You'll have to look into that. Especially Vienna has a very good reputation. We may be in financial trouble if the financial crisis right now spreads to Eastern Europe and hits it badly, in which case we would lose the massive amount of money our bank have invested there. However, there are some poor communities like anywhere else in the big cities, with some people blaming immigrants for the problem. There are 2 big political parties in Austria who are sometimes (a bit unfairly, but only to a point) compared to the Nazis because they are on the far right and blame Muslims for nearly everything. The two parties together make up about 30% of the Austrian Parliament.
Austria is part of the EU since 1994/5 (depending on who you ask). Most people are still in support of being members.
if you need any other infos email me :)
edit: also might be of interest: although we are part of the EU, we remain neutral in a similar way to Switzerland. |
