Hi,
I can tell you that the majority of the Austrians don't know "The Sound of Music" - I've never heard that they bring it on TV - my first contact (and I am Austrian) with TSOM was when my class and I spent some time in Vancouver - funny, isn't it?

I think it is because of the loads of cliché you can find in this musical - like the thing with the favourite meals: schnitzel with noodels and warm apfelstrudel etc. etc.

I think if you show it Austrian students without commenting it the will also complain about the gender roles in it...

I think it's funny but you always have to keep in mind that it's just a musical/film and it's not how the Austrians really are.

Hope this helped,

greets from austria,

ines

People of the younger generation feel no links to this kind of film, which is really old fashioned. I, who belong to the older generation, instead, consider it one of the many “Schnulzen” (Romantic old timer) and even if it is full of non-Austrians actors, when I first saw it in German TV, I liked it and consider it a variation on the old Hans Moser, Sissy and other similar films. The second edition, a sort of part 2, had German actors and was also nice (it showed the family in the USA). Likeable yes, for me. Credible, yes. We happen to know a descendent of one of the girls.

KhK
on BBC radio on the other day heard that Austrians don't care much about the movie as its too much, as its not very close to reality.

Miss USA 2009
I love that movie I don't see why they would not like it

they basically take it like they accept rain - can't be helped. most have heard of it, but not seen the movie or play.
it's really a good example of stereotyping, right down to the gender roles etc.
really a Hollywood version of a difficult time, which is still not totally understood by the inhabitants of this lovely country, and also not by most outsiders as well.
