What is the best souvenir to take home?

For someone who has never been to Vienna before, what would be the best (and not too expensive) souvenir to take home?

Also, I heard there are 400 balls a year in Vienna. How do you get invited? Or do you have to pay for entrance? Where do people get the fancy dress for the balls? Can someone just go and watch the other dancers? I'm really oblivious about this stuff but I just watched an Andre Riel DVD and was enthralled with the dancers and singers.

Most balls are public - you just pay for the entrance. They are organized by different groups who hope to make some money from it - either for charity or for themselves. Even a lot schools organize balls and the students use the money for a journey together after they have graduated. Some are more difficult to get in than others (like the Viennese Opera Ball).
You can buy dresses in better clothes shops, brides shops or with designers - depending on your budget. I think it should also be possible to rent an evening gown.
Not all balls are evening dress balls - there are also a lot of costume balls so make sure which one you chose.
The official ball season is already over for this year - it ends traditionally 40 days before Easter when the "Lenten Season" beginns.

As for the souvenir: Why not have a look yourself when there. Much better to find something yourself that reminds you on your visit than hunting for something someone you do not know has recommended.

Brutally Honest
Balls are traditionally by invitation only; I believe it would considered the highest insult to try to crash or buy your way in. Get cozy with a local who may or may not be able to get on the guest list...that would probably be your best chance.

As for souvenirs, I have always been partial to photographs, memories and stamped postcards. I send myself a postcard from EVERYWHERE I go and that way I not only have a perfect picture but also the date and city I was in (on the postmark).
