I understand completely how you feel. I am an American living in Germany, and would never leave my husband, but am so lonely that I cry sometimes.
Where do you live in Austria? I live in Lindenberg, which is about 5 miles from the border of Germany and Austria. If you live close, we could visit each other. |

Learn German, take a course in it. Especially if you're going to be there a while, you'll need to learn the language for even very basic things. Plus the more you know, the more you'll learn, it's not like you're without the chance to speak it, so when you go out with your husband and his friends, try speaking to them in German, I'm sure they won't mind if you make mistakes.
Also, if you take a course you'll meet other foreign people who are possibly in the same position as you, and you could make friends with them. |

Moving to a new city, let alone a new country, where you know only a couple of people can be very daunting. Since you are interested in learning German and making friends - why don't you find out if there are any evening German classes nearby? Or, check the local classifieds and see what groups are out there? For example, American/ Canadian/ English expats meeting at a local coffee shop every 2nd Wednesdays for conversation. Online classifieds like craigslist would have advertisements similar too. It's going to take a bit of research but I am sure that there are a few groups or classes out there you can join in which you can improve your German, and make friends as well! Good luck.
Cheers,

Hang out w/ your husband's friends for now. And try to get them to bring some people they might think that you would like to meet. |

No way. I'm American and was in Salzburg 2 months ago. LOTS of people spoke english. All the young people, at least to age 25, spoke english.
Go to the tourist spots. Meet some local people whom work in those places. I am certain they will speak english.
That is a start. |
