I really like the "Museumsquartier" as social spot in Vienna. It combines the old flair of the Monarchy with Modern Art, many young people and bars & restaurants.
A good location at night are all the bars at the "GĂĽrtel". That is a big street that distincts the inner districts from the outer districts. In the middle of the street is the Subway U6 and all around you find clubs and bars with many students and young people. f.ex "Chelsea", "B72", "Kju" and many more.

Stephansplatz Or the
Rathaus area.
When i lived in Vienna my friends and myself would always hang out around in those areas. There are always alot of friendly people just hanging out there... So your luck would probley be pretty decent there! :o)
