Depending on just what things you like to see, I would suggest Vienna as nice hub. From there it is easy to visit various countryside locations, as well as take a quick train to Bratislava (Slovakia--about 1 hour to 1 hour 30 minutes) or a longer train to Budapest (about 3-4 hours).
There are many nice things in Austria, including Salzburg and Innsbruck, but if you want a good location for a week's worth of activities, then Vienna is the place.
While there be sure to visit the Hofburg area (museums, chapel, etc.), Kunsthistorisches Museum, Schonbrunn palace, the Rathaus and the Church of St. Stephen. And, if you can, attend a Vienna Boys Choir performance. For that, you will definitely need to have a reservation (the earlier obtained the better).
I am happy to make specific recommendations. I provide personal tours and group tours of Rome and Europe. Feel free to contact me through my website listed below.
