I always use my credit card. However, I try to have some cash because in Austria not all stores accept credit cards, especially the small ones.
You get more for your dollars in Austria. I have asked here in some banks and at the airport and they have a bad exchange rate.
Have a nice trip! |

the ATMs in Austria will accept all major cards: Maestro, Mastercard, VISA and Cirrus so you can also draw money from your home account - but this time at an extra charge. |

Yes, I'd be happy to give you advice:
1. Keep your beanie on your head as it's pretty darn cold there right about now;
2. 'Exchange' your money at da bank von Oetereich (which is Austrian for Austria and has absolutely nothing to do with osteriches) in central Vienna, as they'll give you the official rate, plus a mark-up (down for you) for their troubles;
3. If you do decide to exchange your good ole greenbacks on the street with a violin-playing munchkin, make sure he doesn't give you the old currency; get euros and hold them up against the light even if you don't know what to look for (at least the money exchanger will have respect for you).
And that's my candid advice to you.
Oh, and be sure to try their wiener schnitzel... and no, it's not what you think and certainly not as tiny as you think! After all, Austrians have a hearty appetite; just look at Arnold Schwartzenegger if you don't believe me. And finally, relax and enjoy, for Austria is really a beautiful country, and Vienna its crown jewel. |
