It depends on what is your budget and what you're interested in...beaches, surfing, relaxing, clubs...I've been to this 5 star hotel in Ponta Negra "Sehrs", perfect view and great service, there are many hotels you can choose in Ponta Negra which is one of the most famous beaches in Natal, and where you can find the most "hot" places to go out, there are great restaurants there as well, plus almost all of the places around there you'll find people who speak english, clubs, hotels, malls, restaurants...Ponta Negra is the right place for a fun and exciting vacation, Pipa is the best beach for surfing, it's about 3 hours away from Natal, so if you're interested in getting to know the city, you don't want to go there, if you want to relax and chill you'll like beaches like Cotovelo, Tabatinga, Cotovelo is where I'm from, it's a beautiful beach and you'll find a few restaurants around, great hotels but the beach is not crowded, if you want to taste a bit of everything you should stay in Ponta Negra and buy one "buggy sand dunes trip", there are lots of big and small agencies that offer this service, you'll have a trainned driver, most of them speak english, he or she will drive through the coast for a full day and you'll get to know all the beaches, you can choose to go up north or down south, it takes a whole day to each of those trips, there will be stops where you can enjoy the view, take pics, swim, visit historic places and eat, all through the beach, you won't see one single road...there will be driving up and down sand dunes, that's the wild part of the trip, if you do go in one of those trips be sure to ask the driver to stop longer at "Maracajau" you'll dive and see wonderful coral reefs, there's also ski-bunda, kind of snowboard but on the sand... be sure to wear lots of sun block, Natal is very hot all year long, it rains sometimes during may-june-july, but it's still warm, Natal is the safest capital in Brazil, but because you're a tourist be a bit careful, make sure your money is safe, don't carry credit cards out at clubs. Enjoy it, Natal, the Northeast of Brazil as a whole have paradise like beaches, great food (try things like "pacoca=jerky beef, feijao verde com arroz=green beans and rice, macaxeira=Mandiok with butter") check out this restaurant in Natal city "MANGAI" it's the best place for our ethnic food, you'll find everything there with proper names and translation, good music (rythms like "coco de zambe=an african related drums music and dance, forro=very popular over the Northeast of the country) else than the well-known samba and bossa nova...check out this place also in Natal city "Casa da Ribeira"...remember these names and ask about it in the hotel you'll stay, they'll sure let you know how to get there, I suggest you rent a car, it's easy and safer for you...visit this site www.natal.com.br and www.natal.rn.gov.br, Have a great vacation !

I was in natal before I was born. I think it would be painful for your mother to go back there.
