I've been to Brazil and I'm Canadian.
I found pretty much everyone was friendly, and interested in me because I was a foreigner there.
I know how to speak Portuguese so they also appreciated that I could speak their language and not just English like some tourists.
The food is very tasty, but it can be very fattening and salty so I got heart burn a lot. You can usually find places with lots of fruit and salads so try to full up on that so you wont gain too much weight from all the meats and fried food.
There is a lot of yummy fried food available that's cheap, don't get suck into that trap though!
Go to the restaurant that serve hot food. Restaurants in Brazil are a lot cheaper than in Canada, as long as you don't go to a tourist trap.
Try to go with a native Brazilian.
Don't walk around looking rich or too touristy because that makes you a target for robbery.
Obviously don't go to dangerous areas.
Bring lots of sunscreen and BUG SPRAY!!!
The bugs wanted to eat me alive there, and left everyone else alone. The Brazilians joked that they like imported blood.
IF you stay for more than 3 months you had to go to the federal police and ask permission to stay the remaining 3 months or you will be fined on your way out.
Good luck.
*edit* I really didn't like the pizza either. |

I loved Brazil! I spent a year there as an exchange student. When I went to Brazil i really didnt know any of the language and I didnt know anyone there. The Brazilians are very nice warm people. They love to help. Learning the language wasnt so hard, it took me about 3-4 months. Brazil is very diverse. The south has a lot of european influence, and the northeast states have african influence. I stayed in Bahia on the northeast. The beaches there are beautiful! The only thing I disliked was the pizza there. Brazilian pizza has a lot of toppings but no tomato sauce. The Brazilians usually put ketchup, mayo, and mustard on thier pizza :/ |

Oi! Tudo Bien!
I am not Brazilian but I am Guyanese-American. Brazil is our neighbor country and we are very close knit in cultures and the mixture of people. My best friend is from Brazil and we went there for carnaval in 2007. It was really fun! Her family still stays there. Rio De Janiero and the beaches are sooo nice! Cococabana and Ipanema Beach is nice. You should go around February when it is carnaval time, you would have so much fun! The only scary thing about Brazil is the robberies. I almost got robbed. I had my digital camera and was taking pictures like crazy and this guy wanted to take a picture and my best friend had spoke to him in Portuguese and he left. Also my best friend and I met a lady when we were in Caba Frio and she told me that I should not tell people I am American. I should tell them I am from Guyana and not the United States. The reason she told me that I should not tell the locals I am American, because I could get robbed. The favelas are no joke, if you have no familia there you don't need to go visit it. I have another friend of mine who is 1/2 American and 1/2 Brazilian and he indicated that to me.Then I had to start brushing up speaking Portuguese. All the Brazilians thought I was Brazilian anyways. My best friend, her grandmother's maids swore up and down I had Brazilian heritage in me. I love Brazil. I am planning on going back in September. Also the food is good too and you can get bathing suits for CHEAP! |

You have to go to Brazil, thats it, all the talk about robberies, well I think some people ask for it, show off their hardware in the favelas etc and so on.
These days though Brazil has the same things you would come to expect and take for granted in America or Europe, so people are not so easily impressed about what you have from the states anyway. Its all all in Brazil already. More people now have credit cards, cars homes, tv, DVD, Fridge, Cellphones a plenty, obviously there is poverty as well like in other countries, but you should have a very nice time.
Brazilians are religious people, warm, helpful, nice overall, very community minded, unselfish, caring. I like Brazilians a lot. |
