Having lived in Rio for 4 years, in a non sheltered community and very close to a favela....
I can tell you that actually it is rather safe if you don't look for conflict. I.e. Don't wonder into the favela acting like a tourist or looking for a fight. Same can be said for any country really.
To be honest, all the hype of crime and violence is true dependent on which neighborhood your in.
The same can be said for London. I feel 100% safer in the heart of Rio then I do in Greater London. In fact I have been mugged twice since I have been back.
Not a single issue in Brazil! Or to anyone that I knew whilst I was out there.

The people are awesome and will help you as best they can, even when communication has its boundaries. The food is excellent. The Night life is unparalleled.

I could go on and on for ever. If I ever had the chance to go back/ holiday, then i wouldn't waste time thinking about it :D

There aren't crimes in every street guys.. I live here, my friends don't use drugs, i never used drugs, I was never robbed, and I'm not rich. We have another kinds of musics, not just Samba, we have choro, axé (I dislike), sertanejo, pagode...

It's an amazing place. I'm always dreaming of visiting, but not living there because it's poor, dangerous and unjust (some places are rich like Scandinavia and Canada, while others are as poor as Senegal).

I truely love Brazilians, I think they're athletic, stylish and very beautiful! I love Samba, the beaches, Rio, the sun and nature of Brazil.
Also, Brazil is an amazing multiethnic society, and Brazilians are very tolerant and nice people who pay respect for anyone from anywhere.

It's really worth knowing about! You'll be a dummy if you don't know the name of the country were 200 millions live!

"because it's poor, dangerous and unjust"...

(1) "Poor" - The GDP of Brazil is 2 trillion Dollars, the GDP of Canada (a G7 member) is 1.564 trillion in accord to the CIA's WORLD FACTBOOK. We have the 8th largest economy, but we are poors because you want this?

(2) "Dangerous" - Yes. We have terrorist acts, shotguns in the universities, snipers killing everybody from the top of buildings, and all Brazilians are dead due the extreme crime rate. Right? Nobody has piece, we have not cool places and that guys I see playing soccer, running or walking at 3:00 AM in Rio de Janeiro are illusion, "mirage"?

(3) "Unjust" - You saw the rich and the poor, but you forgot the middle class (largest part of Brazilian population)? There are more than 200 million of credit cards in Brazil, and our population is 196 million. We have more than 120 million of cellphones and, even in the slums, people has DVD, TV, refrigerator and many, computer, but you see only a land with no opportunities? Very interesting you point of view...
