Orion

Anyone know of some nice suburbs / areas around Rio worth spending a month at?

My brother and I are going on a South American vacation for the summer and we are looking for a place in or around Rio that is economical, safe and fun in which we could spend about a month.

Big thanks!

JW!

Oh, I appreciate the advice but I am aware that there are favelas around Rio that are dangerous. That is why I asked if anyone knows an area that is safe and fun. ;)

Hello Joseph,
I used to travel a lot and know Rio very well, and man, is not that dangerous, of course you should behave as you should everywhere in globe, like not carrying tonnes of gold on your necklace, you know, nothing showy, and thats all, rio is an amazing city i know you will enjoy it a lot.
One think you guys need to understand is that favelas(slums) is just a poor people that build their houses in the hills, this favelas is controlled by drug dealers, but of course is not interesting for then to kill people(is not good for "business") of course i totaly don't recommend to spit in them, respect and you will be respected, but it's used to be calm, actually lots of agencies have tours to visit this favelas, explain their history and etc.

About your trip, i think Rio is a good option because currently the local money is lower than half a dollar(1,00 Dollar = 2,35 Reais), so you almost triple your budget, and also you have lots of hotel there for every kind of budget. a good article in wikipedia: http://www.riodejaneiro-hotels.travel/

And man, there is a lot of interesting tours there, when i was there i did lots of crazy tours, i got a real good agency that gives me cheapest prices, i totaly recommend river rafting tour, an unforgetable experience. But also you can enjoy nightlife in Lapa, beaches, nightclubs... man, uncountable options, that is why i love that city. that is the agency i told you so: http://www.riodejaneiro-hotels.travel/
A good tip is to book everything from one agency, because they can get cheapest prices even better than book directly, and you can get guarantees that your trip will go alright or if you need some suport you can count with someone...

Good trip.

DO NOT GO IN THE SUBURBS, there are many favelas (shankytowns) and you can be KILLED. If you want something away from it all and cheap, try Catete. It's in Rio but in a more local setting and not to far from everything.

LOL you have no clue do you. Sorry not to be rude but you should've researched this. The favelas are normally on top of the hills, but you will be going in and out of favelas constantly. You will also interact with all races and economic levels. Brazil is far more diverse than USA. I spent 3 months in the favelas, but keep in mind I know people from there. I also know wealthy Brazilians. Super nice people but these are literal warzones. You should really know Brazilians so they can show you where is safe and where is not safe.

Oh, and honey, I love love love RIO but Rio and SP are not safe.
