I recommend Serras Gaúchas. Not so near Porto Alegre, but not so far.

Serra Gaúchas mountains is a very, very beautiful place to go. The best towns are Canela e Gramado best known by it festivals of cinema, advertsing and chocolate. There,are, also, a tonw in miniature. Good for pictures.

Porto Alegre itself has some interesting stuff. The Serra Gaúcha, a couple of hours away by car or bus, is a good choice. Perhaps the best way to see it is on horseback. You can also take a wine country tour in and around Bento Gonçalves. If you go there, don't miss the Caminho das Pedras, a living museum of Italian immigration.
