Don't listen to these idiots. I'm an American that moved to Brazil four months ago. Sao Paulo is very safe for business, and good for making money. Rio and Sao Paulo have been very safe since enforced police back in 97.

Now shut up, you ignorant bastards.

It has been my experience that Sao Paulo is much like other large cities - there is indeed crime, and the crime rate may be a bit higher than some other cities - but using precaution and good sense helps alleviate that.

I lived in the Caixingi and Morumbi areas as well as the Perdizes and Centro areas. Besides these, I also spent a lot of time in the Bom Retiro, Luz, Avenida Paulista areas. My experience was mostly positive - there are more good people that I met.

Sao Paulo is not a nice, beautiful city, but it's certainly the most business oriented city of whole Brazil. It's very international and is a place that never sleeps. You can find everything there, even in the middle of the night...
It is a dangerous place, with all things we hear happening here no one can denied that, but you have to take basic cares then you won't have a problem, unless you are very unlucky....
do not walk in very poor and dark neighborhoods;
do not walk around with expensive clothes or watches;
try to seem alert about people around you;
if you drive a car, close the windows in the red light;
keep part of your cash in the wallet and part elsewhere;
if you are a foreign and do not speak Portuguese, be discreet about this fact;
I live here since 30 years and I was robbed once, with a plastic gun. But I have a Swiss friend who lives here since 3 and was robbed 4 times (always fancy mobile phones and expensive swiss watches, while driving his nice car, he does not take care about the above statements)... so bear in mind that you are also responsible for what happens to you here. Good luck!

It has twenty years of delay Sao Paulo was a very violent, and was one of the Brazilian capital with highest rate of homicides. Today is not the way that things happen. The city, which before was more violent than Rio de Janeiro, today has the lowest rates of criminalida between the capitals of provinces in Brazil. But it should stand out even though he has crime in the city, where one of the neighborhoods (nd the area south of the city) is fourth violent enough, but the situation has improved since the 50's. He believes me, is the city (despite the horrible) very safe past, in comparison with other capital)
A little common sense not to hurt anybody.

Sorry for my English very badly spoken.
I have not studied the language

Sao Paulo is not a safe city... specially if you compare to the USA level of safety. You have always to be looking around when you are in Sao Paulo... watching out for everything and everyone... no car windows open or you are totally crazy... you would be roberred in the first traffic light you stop at.
Better saying, I am from Brasil and would never live in Sao Paulo or even recommend anyone to live there, specially an american who id not used to the brasilian life style.

the media exagerates... it is dangerous, but you won't die if you go there. and rio is more ddangerous than são paulo. i know that because i live in são paulo and my dad often has to travel to rio, and he says that rio is much more dangerous. são paulo is just like any other big city in the world. it is dangerous (but not as much as the media says), grey and has a lot, i repeat, a LOT of traffic.

No way. Sao Paulo makes Rio look like Mayberry, but , i think if you are Latin and speak the language and stay on the good side of town, Brazil is booming.

Sao Paulo is most dangerous and ugly city of world (TIMES).
It's 7 times violence of New York and 6 times of Rio de Janeiro violence and 3 times Iraq violence.

It's better you Rio de Janeiro city. See it:
