you want beach go to the northern beaches, around fortaleza, recife, they have the most beautiful beaches

you want adventure there are plenty of eco-sports in brazil, mountain climbing & biking, bungee jumping, hiking

you want nature, there are 2 spots ive been to that are absolutely great
pantanal and abrolhos
pantanal is a swamp and abrolhos is a small archipelago off the coast, if you can only pick one, go to abrolhos

Hi there! I spent 2 months travelling up the coast of Brazil a year ago.

Rio is an obvious must, with beach options like Buzios not too far away to the north.

However, I really liked Bahia. I took the local Green Line bus from Salvador and it is possible to stop off at all the beaches up the coast. A great place to visit is Mangue Seco at the northernmost point of Bahia accessible only by boat or dune buggy. It is a little village built on Sand Dunes, so the "streets" are sand too!

You can stay at the Pousada Grao de Areia for 35 Reais per night. Julio is the owner (a tiny man reminiscent of Tattoo from Fantasy Island!) and he serves a fantastic breakfast included in the price.

If you want to ride the dunes on a buggy, ask for Massimo. He is an Italian who owns a bar on the beach, as well as buggies and property for rent.

If you make it north of Bahia, visit Olinda just north of Recife. Beautiful colonial buildings.

And if you have time (and the money!!!), visit the island of Fernando di Noronha. Flight and accommodation not cheap, but around 1000 dolphins visit the island every morning. Quite a sight! The beaches there are fantastic too! And you can snorkle with the turtles!!!

You must see Petropolis (you will find there a big organ and a famous hotel called "QUITANDINHA"); TeresÃ³polis (from the main avenue you see a mountain called "Dedo de Deus", that means, God's finger) or, you can see, also, the "Granja Comari", a beutiful place used by the national brazilian football (soccer) team ; Nova Friburgo (a german town); Penedo (a town founded by immigants from Finland. Very nice!) Itatiaia and Resende, where you can find the "Pico das Agulhas Negras" and the Army's academy (AMAN); Cabo Frio, Araruama and BÃºzios, all with very good beaches.

If you want something coldest, you can goes to the "Serras GaÃºchas", very nice european look places.
The best places are Canela e Gramado (there's a chocolate festival this weekend), best known by their Cinema festival. There,are, also, a tonw in miniature. Good for pictures.

I suppose it depends on the reason you are going. I lived in Salvador, Bahia and I loved it. Carnaval was much more fun there than in Rio (not so commercial and touristy). Plus Salvador seems so much more artsy than Rio or Sao Paulo. If you go to Salvador then you MUST go to Morro do Sao Paulo. You can get there by plane or small boat. It's not difficult to get there and it's a lot of fun. It's also not yet overrun with tourists and it is very safe.

I have been to Manaus, in the north of Brasil, which has practically no tourists which is cool. I suggest going there and then taking an over night 3 storey boat trip where you take your own hammock to sleep in amongst everyone else and go to Codajas, a small town down the Amazon. Hire a motorcycle and go off exploring there, it's amazing.

rent a car, and you will find them. I personally liked the south better than the north.

Take a car and drive a good 2 hours south of Rio. You will go through prainha, and can push all the way to the port that can take you to ilha grande. The sights are beautiful along the way. Take a boat to Ilha Grande.

Florinapolis also has some really nice spots. Rent a car and go all over the ilsand of Santa Catarina. There are some beautiful beaches on the island with clear water were you are the only one for miles. Very easy to find. Just head toward the water.

I didnt really see anything great to the south of Santa Catarina.

The north has nice beaches but doesnt have the mountains and valleys near by. So i didnt find them as interesting. The surf is a lot smaller in most of the north.

I wish i could remember the name of the natural park out there by Bahia. It is about 3 hours inland from Salvador. It is beautiful. It has underground tunnels of a dried up underground river. It also has beautiful plateau's like the ones in New Mexico.

If you really want to know a secret.

Go to Curitiba by plane. Take the old train for about 10 dollars through the mountains (amazing sights) all the way down to this small port. From the port you take a boat to a small island called Ilha do Mel(ask how to get to Ilha do Mel at Curitiba). Its a nice little island. Dont let the kids there scare you. Depends on when you go, but it may have hundreds of kids 14-16(island still has enough room for everyone) getting high. You dont have to partake, but the island is really nice.
