Brazil for a year, can someone tell me everything about it!?

Okay, so my name is Alyssa. I'm a sophomore in high school. I love adventure and am looking for change, so I signed up to be a foreign exchange student in Brazil for a year. Can someone please give me a run down of the country? I know its sort of generalizing, but just basics will do.

My main concerns are: How expensive is clothing
Are people friendly usually
Will I be discriminated because I'm from Usa?
If I don't wear a thong bikini will I be considered
strange?(lol)
What are the men like?
What is the food like?
What should I stay away from/ make sure
to visit?

answers to any of these questions will be greatly appreciated!

- well, i'm brazilian, and.. cloths... if there are ''de marcas'' (sorry but i don't know how to say that.. let me see... expensive.. whatever) it will be so expensive as in another country, but.. if there are simple.. it will be very chip, depends what u like..
- no, u won't be discriminated cause u are american, cause wu love stranger, and we are very friendly :)
- no, many people use thong bikini, not the most, but some one else use :)
- the food is amazing! but, if u don't like, u can have mc'D, subway, bob's, and other fast food
- stay away from Favelas, it are veery veeeeeery dangerous!
i hope that i can help u :D

† André †
the clothes are not expensive
the people are friendly and pleasant
you will not discriminated, brazilians like foreigners
really not, u can wear any bikini that u want
the men normally are extroverts, brazilians are extroverts
the brazilians normally eat in the morning breads, coffe, milk. lunch: rice, beans, steak, potato, tomato and others. the food is good. don't worry about it.
u shoud visit the touristic places, beaches... and stay away from the favelas and wild/desert places.

sorry for the bad english

OMG! I am going as an exchange student to Brazil too next year! I'm going with AFS, you? (You can message me from my profile). lol, :)

Anyway, I haven't been there yet, but this is what i have heard:

My main concerns are: How expensive is clothing- I';ve heard that people expect it to be cheap just because it is in latin america, but it is the most expensive country in latin america. like a shirt will be like $30.
Are people friendly usually- YEA! I have even met some brazilians here (US) and they were really really nice.
Will I be discriminated because I'm from Usa?- I don't know... :)
If I don't wear a thong bikini will I be considered
strange?(lol)- That's what i've heeearrd... but ???
What are the men like?- someone told me that since there are so many "beautiful brazilian women" they don't have to bother chasing girls who don't want the attention.
What is the food like?- beans, rice, things like that
What should I stay away from/ make sure
to visit?-???

For me answer you accurately is necessary to know in which city you will be accommodated.

The cities have different habits due to immigration of different people for each one of the areas.
In the South German , in the northeast Dutch , in the southeast French and Italian . Like this being each place has different habits.

Don't worry in being harassed in Brazil by being north American, here we didn't discriminate anybody, the maximum that will happen is that you will be called of gringa.

Hi! Alyssa.

I'm brazilian and I can help you about these questions. I'm from Rio, living in my hometown, so I know everything you want about Brazil and brazilians. First read this answer. But, after reading this, if you want to know more, I have another complete answer about Brazil and brazilians below.

1 - CLOTHING:
Depends on the brands. If a imported (imported products are taxed for more 60% over original price) like Gucci, Versaci, Valentino, or some Von Dutch, will be more expensive, of course. But, don't care about this, because you will find many good brazilian brands at shopping centers.

2 - FRIENDSHIP
Brazilians are very friendly. Mainly with foreigners because we are too much obsessive about the image of Brazil. Brazilians are very receptive for tourists or people who wish living here.

Brazilian girls are easer to make friends. They talks with any person independent if he/she is ugly, poor or idiot. The World is not divided in "Winners" and "loosers", for us, brazilians. So, don't try changing their mind, with well accepted concepts in the USA, please. You will make friends so easily and quick that it can look different to you. Your new friends (girls) probably will treat you as they was a friend of you since ten years ago. This may be a little bit strange for you since you don't know her...

Brazilian girls talks with no stop, sometimes. Be patient, please...

Brazilians kisses two or three times when somebody is introduced, be man or woman. It's natural, here. Brazilians are very, very informal and will call you for your first name - Alyssa. Not your family name.

As any other girl in Brazil, you will create a profile in Orkut. It's similar to MySpace and everybody have a profile in www.orkut.com.

(OBS. Don't pay attention if a brazilian say he/she will call you later in cell phone, because is just all he or she will not do. This is a way for cuting/avoid conversations when they don't wants to talk with you.)

3 - US CITIZENSHIP
No. You will not discriminated for your citzenship. But, if you become to support the acts of George Bush in Iraq, people will conden you atitude, of course. Brazilians loves all and everyplace. We have no enemies and almost nobody hate us (only
due football/soccer)....

4 - THONGS
Well. Almost every brazilian woman who loves Sun and beaches,
wear small bikinis. This is our culture. Brazilian girls don't see a problem for wearing a very small bikini. This means not they are immoral or "easy for sex". To look beatiful and sexy
is a good for brazilian women, not a sin for them.

There's no age or marital state limit for it. If you are walking on the beaches at sunday morning, for example, you see families with young mons (20-35) almost naked (wearing very, very small bikinis) with their babies/children and the husband is close. You see these girls/women wearing thongs on the beaches and they loves this. It's not considered sexual exploration. But, they are beautiful and likes to show as beatiful they are. So, it's natural for them. There's a invisible competition among them to probe who have the most perfect body. This is a exibithionism, of course. But
most brazilians everybody loves this freedom.

We grow accostumed to watch many documentaries about our native (naked) indians, so, we have not too much problem about nudity as people have about this in USA. Even journalists wear thongs when in a report about summer or something like this.

Observe only women/gilrs with big *sses waer thongs. People
thinks a little bit ridicule when a woman with no *ss is wearing thong. Sorry, but this is your case (don't be offended), your friends will help you to choose an appropiated bikini. See this ((a fashion designer help girls to choose the best bikinis for them):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5MuJX4qNv3A

5 - BRZILIAN MEN
I must to confess, Brazilian men are a little bit submissive to their girl friends. Women rules (in therms of love) in most relations because women has that men are looking for, so, they rules...But, you will see some guys who think that they are doing a favor to be a boy friend of a beautful girl. Like that idiots we see on movies: they are the captain of football team and are members of a brotherhood at some top University, and they think girls must worship them. Some guys are thus, even in Brazil.

I had seeing many people from USA asking for more information about they consider normal but is a tru streotype for us: possessive men who are violent against women. It's not true. Violent men are in any place of the World and Brazil is not an expection, but, is not the best place for seeing this. I know men from USA was pointed as the most agressive in the World due extra level of testosteron and I watch Law & Order...

Well, beasts are present at every country but i'ts not normal in the USA or Brazil. Do you agree?

Brazilians has no problems about different ages. I know 13/14 y.o. teenagers don't have friends above 17 y.o. in USA, Unfortunately people thinks this is strange and some, thinks this is pevert. Im' 43, and I'm talking with you, and I know if was in USA, this probably would result in a investigation by FBI. But, brazilians make friend at any age and you see guys with more than 20 y.o. talking or laying football/volleyball or videogame with teenagers or children less than 10 years. This not means that you see groups of friends with ages between 13 and 60 y.o. walking toghether looking for some fun. Not, of course, but, people don't think is so strange persons of different ages talking or playing some game. This is Brazil.

6 - FOOD
I think Brazilian food delicious. But you find easy typical food from USA here: McDonald's and other US/Brazilian chains, hot dogs at any place, pizza like in Italy and too much snacks at hypermarkets.

But, if you wish to pass all the time eating brazilian food. Nice. We love beans and rice, steak and ..., fish, spaghetti, etc. Furthemore, I advice you experience "coxinha" (http://images.google.com.br/images?hl=pt-BR&q=coxinha&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wi), "risole" (http://images.google.com.br/images?um=1&hl=pt-BR&q=risole&btnG=Pesquisar+imagens)and "pastel" (http://images.google.com.br/images?um=1&hl=pt-BR&q=pastel&btnG=Pesquisar+imagens). Very delicious.

Candies are the best of the world: quindim (http://images.google.com.br/images?um=1&hl=pt-BR&q=quindim ), pudim (http://images.google.com.br/images?um=1&hl=pt-BR&q=pudim&btnG=Pesquisar+imagens ), brigadeiro (http://images.google.com.br/images?um=1&hl=pt-BR&q=brigadeiro ), bomba, rocambole and others. I'm sure you will love all.

7 - PLACES
Stay away from the favelas (slums). People there are nice and worker but, there are many trafficants who control the drugs sales and the guys have many guns and weapon for wars. So, take care to stay far from these places. Almost all problem of violence in Rio, for example, are concentraded in these areas.

What you must to visit depends on where you will live. For more detail, see my other answer:

8 - STUDY
May be a little bit weird for you, but, brazilians are very funny, even in serious situations as a class. Look:

I've only been to Natal, a small town on the very eastern shore. It has a great beach, and a wonderful sand dude buggy ride.
