Brazilians don't really do the "down-on-one-knee proposal" but the custom is that the man asks the family of the bride for her hand in marriage. its called a 'noivado'. From then both of them get engament bands on their right hands and everyone will recognize you guys as 'noivo' and 'noiva' .

the wedding band however, isnt not a big diamond ring that people will see from a mile away. it is almost always(or at least everyone's bands that i have seen) were just simple yellow gold band.
Now, if your boyfriend grew up somewhere else or adopted the culture of America, he probably will do the traditional American proposal.

Brazilians marriage proposals are usually less elaborate than the American ones as most American plan really crazy romantic ways to propose while Brazilians will most likely just pop the question.
If in Brazil, once it is accepted the fiance will usually ask the fiancee's hand in marriage to her family and there will be an engagement party. As for the engagement ring, fiance and fiancee will wear an engagement ring which is usually the wedding band used in the right hand (after marriage the bands will be used in the left hand)
