You are an American citizen and should have a U.S. passport. Therefore, you need a Brazilian visa in your U.S. passport.

You can do either one. If you are a Brasilian citizen you would want to bring both your US and Brasil Passport, and when you enter Brasil show your Brasilian passport and when you return to the US show your US passport. Or, you can get a visa at any Consulate or Embassy of Brasil. Either way as long as you have a passport or Visa you can enter the country. The only different is that the Visa usually comes with a time cap for your stay. If they say that you are suppose to have a Brasilian passport, as long as you have a visa they cannot deny you access to the country.
