I am a brazillian living in the US for my second year now.

1) Not really. There will always be a way of saying yourself since you speak spanish and english. Really depends on where in Brazil you are.

2) What's a language barrier? lol

3) That might be a problem. Because in many brazillian regions not many people have the opportunity to learn english.

4) Yes. I'm brazillian and have over 6 friends from portugal in my school and we have no problem ^^

Hope it helps ;)

Hello,

Some Brazilians speak English. We can understand a little of Spanish cause it seems Portuguese. It would be better if your friend try learn important sentences in Portuguese like 'I am hungry' 'where is the bathroom?'. We understand Portuguese people, well something when they don't speak so fast.

Dra. Chayote
If you come to Brazil don´t worry about the language. We are prepared to receive you and you´ll come out of here delighted with the different cultures.

Brazilian kisses for you!

You may and you may not. There are Brasilians who speak English and Spanish, or one of the two. There are also many who do not speak either language. Also, it is easier for Brasilians to understand Spanish than it is for Spanish speakers to understand Portuguese. It all depends on who you run into. The more you know, the better.

Sao Paulo and Rio may be a little easier because they are huge countries with many tourists so you will probably have a better chance finding someone to converse with you in these languages.

It is more difficult for a Brasilian to understand the Portuguese because the accent is quite different and the Portuguese speak faster. It is still relatively the same language, however, so it should not be too much of a hassle.

Hope that helps. Deus abencoe!

1- Few people speaks English. With Spanish could be easier.
2- SP and Rio people will try to understand you, even if they on't speak english.
3- She only will have more difficult to understand things.
4- Yes.

Q.1 and Q.2: Considering those cities believe you will survive, quite ok. It does not mean that you won't have problem, means we may have more people speaking English and Spanish than other cities on the country.
Q.3 Yes, she probably will. If she comes at same cities, above information may apply.
Q.4 Several workds can be different between Portugal portuguese and Brazil portuguese, but I guess the information can be captured from context.

We have professionals very well qualified to receive foreign tourists, the restaurants have a maitre that speaks at least a language foreigners, there is no problem. São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro are Cosmopolitan cities.
As to understand what the Portuguese speak, it is the same experience that you Americans have when hear an English speak.

Q.1) You may occasionally run into problems. I am living in Brazil and only speak English and a little bit of French (and of course, now some Portuguese). Most of the problems I've had have been minor, such as getting a scone at the bakery when I was actually trying to buy bread. Since there are so many similarities between Pt. and Sp., you'll probably have even fewer issues getting your point across, And my experience has always been that people are very understanding and helpful when you say, "Nao falo portuguese."

Q.2) If you are near touristy areas or business areas in those cities, you're more likely to find people who can speak English.

Q.3) Probably not.

Q.4) I can't answer this question, as all Portuguese is difficult for me to understand.

as you Speak spanish,it`ll be much easier for you than for your friend.but try to get some basic brazilian portuguese classes, because even though spanish and portuguese are very similar when written, when spoken both are quite different and the grammar in both languages can be tricky sometimes.and accents varies all over the country ,then in some places it can be easier or harder for you to understand.about understanding portuguese people, their accent are really different from ours,in general.but if they speak slow ,we can understand.because of this it`ll be easier for people to understand you if you take basic brazilian portuguese classes instead of european portuguese classes.i recommend the same thing to your friend.boa sorte.

1. If you speak slowly enough, people at Immigration, Customs and Hotels will be glad to help you. It will give the clear impression that you want to communicate and do not assume that everyone in the world is supposed to speak English. Spanish will help a lot, though.
2. In Sao Paulo and Rio you'll have less problems than anywhere else, but be willing to have patience with the locals as you explain what you need. The main issue is not when you speak, but when they try to answer you.
3. Same as both above
4. The accent in Portugal and the vocabulary are quite different. Sometimes it is easier for me, personally, to understand a Spanish person speaking than a Portuguese.

thais
yes u can...
the spanish looks like Portuguese..
and in Brazil have many people that speak english..

Júhh
Well, if you speak Spanish, no problem. But the your friend...
