very nice piece on Zipf's Law in Brazil and in the US. Unfortunately there is a problem: the quality of the data on urbanization in Brazil. José Eli da Veiga has stressed how unreliable and insane are the 1938 official criteria on definition of urban areas in Brazil. Official data on urban population in Brazil is hugely overestimated and weirdly related to the number of municipalities created. Therefore, historical trends on urbanization in Brazil are unreliable and international comparisons should be avoided.
Recently, Embrapa used satellite images to identify urban areas and this is the best data that you can get. (The main limitation, obviously, is that there is no historical data)Australia`s rugby team arrived in France on Wednesday ahead of the Rugby World Cup which kicks off on September 7. The Wallabies immediately headed to the Quai Branly museum in Paris, which holds collections from Oceania, Asia, Africa and the Americas. Th

Bounded by the Atlantic Ocean on the east, Brazil has a coastline of over 7,367 kilometres.[1] It borders Venezuela, Suriname, Guyana and the department of French Guiana to the north, Uruguay to the south, Argentina and Paraguay to the southwest, Bolivia and Peru to the west, and Colombia to the northwest.[1] Numerous archipelagos are part of the Brazilian territory, such as Penedos de S?o Pedro e S?o Paulo, Fernando de Noronha, Trindade e Martim Vaz and Atol das Rocas.[1][2] Brazil was colonized by Portugal from 1500 until its independence in 1822. The republican system has been adopted since 1889, although its parliament dates back to 1824, when the first constitution was ratified. Its current Constitution defines Brazil as a Federative Republic.[3] The Federation is formed by the indissoluble association of the States, the Federal District, and the Municipalities.[3] There are currently 26 States and 5,564 Municipalities.[4] Brazil is the world's 9th largest economy in terms of purchasing power and the 10th largest economy at market exchange rates. Brazil has a diversified middle-income economy with wide variations in development levels, with mature manufacturing, mining and agriculture sectors. Technology and services also play an important role in the economy, and are growing rapidly. Brazil is a net exporter, having gone through free trade and privatization reforms in the 1990s. Brazil's economy outweighs that of any other Latin American country.[5][6] A pluralistic and multi-ethnic society, Brazil is also home to a diversity of wildlife in a variety of protected habitats.
