Youth hostels are not safe to begin with. Many people rob. If you can, just spring for a nice room for two nights, walk around, get to know people and places. THEN move to a cheaper place. It is always better to survey the town once on the ground. Many hostels will boast "clean, safe" and they ARE NOT. Many families have rooms they let, and usually cook and feed you too. Search for "cabinas" in Sao Paulo. or family rooms. That's the best way to go.
