Hi mr.Star!
Well, Brazil is an amazing country i know pretty well, i used to go on vacations with my family for every big touristic city ever, and i can bet that you will really enjoy that country, the most impressive is the warm of that people, very welcoming and outgoing. The spoken language is portuguese is almost the same of the Portugal but they have an accent totaly diferent even in between cities of Brazil you can hear diferent accent of portuguese, but all cities with touristic structure you can find lots of people that can speak english.
And man you really don't need to worry about money there, cause the "real"(local money) is lower than half of a dollar(1,00 dollar = 2,40 real), so you almost triple your budget. A good tip is to start for one of the biggest cities there, Rio de Janeiro, man this city is something else... they have natural beauties, a wonderful nightlife, beaches, cultural stuff and one of the "seven wonders of the world" called Corcovado...
there is a good articles about Rio in wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rio_de_Janeiro
Is increditable how much things you have to do in this city, a good tour you can have is tropical island, you take a boat and visit several paradisiac islands, eat a fish caught minutes before you arrive, enjoying wonderful sunny beach drinking you caipirinha(is a drink with limon, vodka and sugar), man... is like a heaven in earth. Another important tip if you wanna save some money is to buy everything from an agency, cause they used to have better prices(even better than book directly) and you can count with some support on your trip, in rio i used this one: http://www.riodejaneiro-hotels.travel/ they are really reliable and cheap. i found them in new york times article, good guys.

Good travel.
bye

I'm American living in Santos Sao Paulo, Br. (lots of police around)
I've been here 2 months. Feels very safe.

I truly believe it's the safest place, stay away from the big cities.

Here's a video of Santos , Brasil.

Official language in Brazil is Portuguese.

Relations between the United States and Brazil are characterized as fairly warm and friendly. The United States has increasingly regarded Brazil as a significant power, especially in its role as a stabilizing force and a skillful interlocutor in Latin America. U.S. officials tend to describe Brazil, like Chile, as a friendly country that shares the U.S. commitment to democratic practices and prudent macroeconomic policies. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brazil_%E2%80%93_United_States_relations

Well.. We speak portuguese. In any city.
If you stay in a nice place and to know a brazilian friend to guide you (you'll understand why it's better being with a friend beside you. Preference a brazilian friend who has tripped a lot around the world).

There are a lot of places you can go. First we should know what kind of places do you want to go.

People see foreign people normaly in general.
;-)
