Prepared for some readings? Hey ho let's go: first of all, when do you go? If you are planning, let's assume will be within the next 3 months. It's the beginning of spring in end September in "south" Brasil which means some occasional strong rains but normally short and sun again soon after. It seems you (I don't know about your whitening skined husband) have no problems with hot weather and the temperatures tends to only increase each day since now (eventually it happened to come a late cold stream like the last week) onwards. The contrary will be happening in Italia as just one of the answerers properly put already, but with less intensity if its southern portions. This will led us to the next point: which region of the both would you considering to go and how long is the period of staying there for vacation. From Canadá, I wonder the minimumm staying in Brasil for a reasonable visit is 3 weeks. I guess the same applies to the counterpart, but perhaps you may easierly see Italians from the Alps to the Mediterranean Island in the same period and a regional choice must be apllied in the Brazilian case. Therefore, would you prefer to concentrate to the bigger cities, trying São Paulo or Rio as port of entry? In this cases I would recommend to go for both the São Paulo-Rio States axis shore (if beaches are the turn on, try from Ilha Grande, Búzios, Paraty to Juquehy, Maresias) or the countryside of Minas Gerais (for more historicultural affairs) or some natural parks and with a bit of effort going to Curitiba and then (praying for big rains come soon) to The National Park of Foz the Iguaçu (have you ever heard that Eleanor Roosevelt comment "Poor Niagara"?). Of course, all of this need another technical question: do you want to make a budget trip, only the couple, backpacker kind or the kids and all inclusif services with plane tickets all the ways where possible? I guess in Italia is also easier to travel in a family way if you are tourists first time in that "strange" land. Maybe you could check for what it was used to be called the Brazilian Pass, a kind of combo ticket in which you can pre-define 4or 5 international airport cities and fly though one to another uncomparably cheaper than if paying each legs once in the country. The detail is to know about the viability of this kind of pass after the problems with the Varig Brazilian aircraftcompany, which headed up to its crisis the flight partnership for issuing this special ticket. I have no idea if the situation for commercializing the BP is normal or if it caused some more restrictions. Another limitation is that you must prearrange all your steps and not making decisions while in course, which make the trip not that flexible. Anyway, this can be a good way to skip cities like São Paulo and Rio and go only for the Northeast and Amazon region (if from Canada you have direct flights available to Fortaleza or Salvador for instance, it's a waste of time considering stops further south). Along these previous considerations you must ponder to define which one is the Vacation country of this year, you both could make a list of motivations to go in each case and see how much it can match your expectations. Like others in a way pointed out here, if beach is top priority (go to Northeast, the best in Brasil, ever, warmer and not so salty water, cheaper prices than in south), if classical, ancient, wineculture is the case (no doubt, Italia) , if popular culture, folklorical aspects (still northeast Brazil or south Italia), If football, it will be definitely happier with Azzura this time. So feel free to ask whatever more you want and also, I chose to end this with an important factor to bias your /my judgement. I'm Brazilian, I 'm from São Paulo city, I recommend the capital of SPState ONLY if you have friends in there or want to make profissional contacts too, I've been 3 times in& loved Rio as tourist, although I have no friends there, which hipothetically would make my stays more comfortable (not refering in a hotelwise manner). My wife and I would consider raise children up in the Northeast if we had Canadian/European financial welfare, cause it seems people over there are happier despite the poverty may appear more explicit. Being in Europe for some years I could appreciate some countries as tourist but one I would mention that I'm kinda frustrated for not having a proper opportunity to stop by is Italia. The South of the country is still one of the dream trips I would do by car. |

Hate to go against conventional wisdom here but I vote for Brasil.
I love Italy - but it is really expensive these days with the US Dollar being so weak against the Euro. Brasil is very inexpensive - we stayed in upscale places in Rio - safe, clean, and comfortable for less than we had paid for a fleabag in Florence the year before.
And just this year I spent 3 months in Colombia - Bogota' and Cartagena. Fantastico !!! And, they like gringos too. You didn't mention Colombia but I hope you'll consider it. |

I would flip a coin. They would both be equally exciting I think. My husband and I use this method often and we are never disappointed. However the rule is next year the loser gets to chose. So we only have to use this method every other year. Have fun whatever you choose. |

This is so hard because both are wonderful places with lots to see, friendly people, good food, excellent weather....
I think a lot depends on how long you have to travel, how much money you have to spend, and what kind of things you like to do.
If you are beach and sports people...hands down, Brazil.
Are you planning to stay in one place, or travel around the country? If you want to fly, it's Brazil. In Italy, the trains are a great way to see a lot of scenery and meet friendly people.
Why don't you compromise and go to Italy for this year, and Brazil next year? That way you'll have 2 outstanding trips and you'll both be happy! |

thats a hard one.. i'm from brazil but living in New Orleans for . I've ALWAYS wanted to go to Italy. brazil is an amazing country.. through experience.. but i kno Italy is too !
if you could go any time of year you wanted then .. i agree with Tara R .. flip a coin.
But if you can only go at certain time .. then decide exactly what u want to do.. the seasons in the countrys are opposite. When its summer in Brazil.. its winter in Italy. so if you are looking for a relaxing vacation .. on the beaches ..and nice nightlife.. then pick Brazil. if you are more into the architure and winter skying in the alps, then Italy. Both have amazing history and culture.. so you'll get that with whichever country you pick.. brazil has nice architure aswell but deff not like Italy or as well known.
cant go wrong with either..
boa sorte |
