I am Brazilian, I was born in Rio de Janeiro, I always lived here. I live in a neighborhood of the north area of Rio de Janeiro, very far away from the tourist area, I know that in the favelas true battles happen, however in the place where I live and where works is totally peaceful. The areas of conflicts exist in the city, Rio de Janeiro is known as the broken city, it is as if they were 2 cities, a the sky, other the hell. I never saw nobody to be murdered, however I know that some 4 people are died violently a day in the favela. I live in the part considered as sky.
That you don't get to imagine is the great social difference that the inhabitants of the city live, for foreigners it is difficult to imagine that such different social classes can live in the same city.
And doesn't impress with films, if it was like this the United States would be the place where would happen the largest crimes in the planet, and only the Super Man and the Spyder man to solve the problems of the United States. |

If Brazil is such a wonderful country than why can't you speak English out loud in the streets ? You never hear of Brazilians getting robbed in the United States because they were speaking Portuguese out loud in the streets. |

Don't let people scare you. Brazil isn't a horrible country like people say. Sure there is violence in the ghetto( favela ) but what country doesn't have its crime? Other than in the favelas, its not bad. Brazil is wonderful, but of course if your around the favelas it can get pretty violent. My advice to anyone who wants to go is don't wear fancy/expensive jewelry when going out. If you can't speak Portuguese, try not to speak English out loud, keep it on the down low. And use common sence. A lot of people in Brazil are friendly as well. In all its a wonderful country and if you use common sence, you'll be fine :] |

Crime in Brazil is pretty bad. I have never heard of anybody moving to Brazil because they think it is a safe and peaceful country. Movies like Cidade De Deus/City Of God and Tropa De Elite/Elite Troops for example paint a 100% accurate portrayal of Brazil. |
