It is not mandatory to have a travel insurance to visit Brazil, but it is highly recommended that you buy one regardless where you go. I always buy travel insurance wherever I fly to. My favorite company is www.assistcard.com. Travel insurance covers all expenses in case you gets hurt or ill. Generally they also supply you with lost luggage insurance, life insurance etc. If you get sick or hurt in Brazil and don't have travel insurance you will have to pay for the treatment, that may be very expensive. Of course, in case of an emergency all hospitals are obligated to treat you, but only in risk of life. I strongly recommend you to buy a travel insurance as it really worth it. One last tip: if you plan to travel to the Amazon - very North Brazil - you must get vacination too. |

It depends on where in Brazil you are. I live in a tiny town (well, 12 000 people) and I don't have any kind of insurance. The hospital, as well as the doctors here are happy to see me for free, like any other Brazilian resident. They also treated my uncle for free when he was here a month ago. In the larger cities I would say yes, you do need insurance, but not in the smaller towns. |

i believe it could cost you a lot of money! it is better to spend a little here and be covered, than get stuck there. some places will not treat you or will even hold you untill your bill is payed. i'm not sure brazil does this, however i would not take the chance! have fun! |

Travel insurance protects the cost of your trip.
What you're looking for is Travel Insurance with Med benefits.
google 'travel insurance" +med
Wondering why you think you might get sick or hurt in Brazil.... Mardi Gras??
Another thought: Medical care in Brazil is very good, and lots cheaper than in USA. The travel insurance w/med will fly you home. Your regular insurance might even cover foreign docs. Call and ask them. |

It is highly recommended that you get travel insurance that include medical care. Nonetheless, if you do ge sick or hurt in Brazil and do not have travel insurance, you can go to a hospital and pay the bill yourself. Medical care is not as expensive here as it is in the US. |

If you get sick in a foreign country, and you do not have insurance that covers you in a foreign country, you might get stuck with paying for the whole bill. Which could be a lot.
Check with your credit card providers. A lot of credit cards offer travel protection, especially the Gold and Platinum ones. But, check the coverage or terms so you're sure that you'll be covered.
Check with your health insurance company to see if your policy covers you in foreign countries, and what the claim procedures are.
You can always get travel insurance, but be sure to read the fine print and understand what the benefits are before you buy it! Some travel insurance will have coverage that includes transportation to get you home. Or reimbursement of travel expenses in special circumstances.
That said, I've traveled to many foreign countries and I've never bought travel insurance or needed it. Knock on wood. The times I did get sick because of travelling, it was minor or at the tail end it and I saw my doctor when I got home. If you get very sick in a foreign country, get home as fast as you can. |
