hiii!!! I'm Brazilian, but i don't live in Rio de Janeiro (there is very beautiful but the place more violent of the country, because have some slum).

the best place is Santa Catarina ( beautiful state with many Beaches in ur cities)

There are hotels all over copacabana and i think the nearer the beach, more expensive. There are so many sites that give good rates like http://realtravel.com/a-178952-rio_de_janeiro_attraction-rio_sul
once i needed a good hotel for a friend and Real Residence which is an aparthotel had the best rate at the time. its a 3 to 5 minute walk from the beach with ok services.

If you have travel partners, renting an apartment will be cheapest alternative. Location is key. You want one on a main road so getting a taxi is easy but the room itself you want toward the back or interior , not facing the street. The buses and traffic can be loud and exhaust fumes get trapped in those dense "canyons". Be sure to know ahead of time if it has hot water, airconditioning, etc. It's perfectly okay to ask to view the apartment before you commit as well.

I'm living in Rio now, I would recommend google hostels in rio, they are inexpensive and clean. There iwll be a small community of international backpackers there, just here to have fun.
instant friends to hang with.

there are hotels all over the place here in Ipanema and Copacabana. check
www.tripadvisor.com for some reviews - they review hostels and bed and breakfasts too.

hi there. I“m from rio and let me give you a piece of advise:
Unless you want to get seriously sick, forget about rio, because of dengue epidemic !
There“s no cure, no vaccine and no public hospitals.
There“s no safety, the weather sucks, and all you see on TV is a big lie !
But if you wanna go to a place where the beaches are nice with warm waters, warm wind and cheap hotels ( from 20US dollars a day) go to bahia, porto seguro

If you are going to stay a week or longer, consider renting an apartment instead of staying in a hotel. The good side of renting an apartment is it's cheaper, has a kitchen (can eat breakfast/snacks, larger refrigerator for drinks, etc.), larger in size, more privacy. The down side is you don't have a maid changing the sheets and towels every day. I use Vanna at www.vannarioflats.com.br. She speaks English and is very honest. She doesn't own any apartments but gets her pay from the landlord. Tell her what you want and she'll arrange it. She's also good on telling you the latest scams. She needs a security deposit (when you get there) but the contract indicates she received the security deposit and she'll give you back your exact bill(s) when you check out.
