Dose anyone know anything about Vidigal in brazil?

Is it a rough neighborhood? I'll be spending all next summer there and I would like to know how it is........I mean I'm from the hood.......but I sure the hood in west chicago is much different.....so I'm just wanting to know a lil about it? I know enough portuguese to get around but I'm thinking about telling the girl I can't stay there I mean its her hood not mine and I really don't want to put my self at risk being an american.
Additional Details
Cause I think alot of people think being american means you have money and for me that not the case.

Vidigal, in my opinion, is worse then the hood in west chicago. Even if you know some portuguese, you most likely have an american accent that will get you caught in uncomfortable situations. Brazilians do think in fact all americans are rich, so they will want something from you. I definitely would not recommend and american staying in Vidigal!!! It has many shootouts, and its not so unlikely for you to get caught in one! If I were you , I wouldnt stay anywhere near the favelas (Vidigal, Rocinha, ect.).

And for your friend, tell her the truth about your concern, brazilian favelados are cautious of the environment they live in.

Hope I helped out!

My hotel (Sheraton Leblon) was very close to favela Vidigal and I didnt like what I saw. If you're going to stay in Rio, stay in either Ipanema or Leblon, avoid Copacabana please. I have been in Rio twice and I dodnt like Copacaban either, too crowded and a bit dangerous at night. Tell your friend you'll stay elsewhere, you wont hurt her feelings. It is better to be safe than sorry, besides, as you say it;s her people, her hood and she'll be alright but maybe you wont as you're the tourist there.

First, Vidigal has one of the most beautiful views in all of Rio de Janeiro over looking the beaches of Leblon and Ipanema. It is in a fantastic location between Barra, Sao Cornado, Gavea and Leblon.

But like most of the favelas in Rio de Janeiro, it is controlled by the organized drug trade, and it is the site of regular gun battles. Avenida Niemeyer which is Vidigal's main artery connecting it to the rest of Rio de Janeiro is often closed due to random bullets "balas perdidas" or even worse ambush car jackings of unsuspecting commuters driving into or out of the Zona Sul from Barra.

I have spent time there and in Rocinha. Most memorable and fulfilling days of my life.

Some of the actors in the film City of God are from Vidigal. They were in acting workshopd staffed by volunteers from the Universities and such. People helping people makes a difference ... one person at a time.

Que DEUS te abencoe e te ilumina com sabedoria...

When people talk Brazil has a lot of crime...it is the same the same as in Chicago or NYC...it depends on where you are..
I remember I wanted to see the favelas (slums) cause there are interesting people there too...but it is the same as here..mostly the wives work and the husbands are robbers

if you mean Vidigal in RIO , go to Copacabana!

Morena do Sul
If you are talking about "favela do Vidigal" in Rio de Janeiro, it's really really really rough. i wouldn't go there if I were you.
Stay in a Hotel always from the "morros" and "favelas".
