Is best you to go other state. Sao Paulo e Rio Janeiro is very hazardous.

There are B&Bs and hotels in all ranges and in different parts of town. It all depends on your budget and your priorities. See some options in the link below. If you want a cool place in a bohemian neighborhood and aren't worried about being near the beach, I suggest the Solar in Santa Teresa.
