Salvador has a lot tourist propaganda, but I am Brazilian and I do not like to go there. Salvador has social problems and is not safe to walk there.
Salvador is the capital of Bahia state.
If you want to come to Brazil is better to go to small towns and beaches, avoid stopping in major cities, beauty is only in small towns and villages.
Salvador near you may be very happy in Porto de Galinhas, Itacaré, Arraial D'Ajuda, small towns and very pleasant, very few problems with security. Brazil is very big and doing the best get here and buy a tour with tour guide to know the main attractions without the risk of going into dangerous places alone. There are many tourist agencies, experts in guiding the tourists.
