Belem is the capital of the northern state of Pará. It is the entrance gate to the Amazon.state, It is one of Brazil's busiest ports - and it's about 60 miles upriver from the Atlantic Ocean. You should definetly visit the Estacao das Docas Complex, it's great at night for dinner. Also see the Colonial complex of the Catedral da Se, Palacio das Onze Janelas,St. Augustin's Church and Forte do Castelo where the city was founded.
You should also check the Museu Emilio Goeldi and Bosque Rodrigues Alves for a sample of Amazon fauna and exuberant vegetation. Belem is know as Cidade das Mangueiras (City of Mango Threes) you'll will understand why as you walk along many of its streets. You should check Praca Batista Campos for a feeeling of a piece of jungle in the middle of modern residential buildings. Also visit Praca da Republica a large park in the middle of the city where you should stop by at the Teatro da Paz a beautiful theatre from the beginning of the century when rubber was a precious commodity. You should also visit the Basilica de Nazare a church built in the same period. In fact, the biggest feast in Pará State happens there, Círio de Nazaré Festivities start on the second Sunday in the month of October and pay homage to Our Lady of Nazareth, patron saint of the State. Organised since 1793, at present it gathers around 1,5 million of followers, who go on a procession through the city to the Nazaré Basilica, where the image is honored. Círio de Nazaré is like Christmas for Paraenses, and special foods such as Maniçoba and Pato no Tucupi are eaten on this occasion. Try also Acai (assah-ee) and tropical fruit juices and ice-creams at Cairu (flavors include Cupuacu, Tapereba, Muruci, Bacuri, Maracuja). There's also a botanic park called Mangal das Garcas which offeres beautiful views to the riverbanks and small islands around the city. You can also check The Ver-o-Peso a famous fish market. Right from there you can take a day river tour and to the small islands surrounding Belelm. If you have time schedule a visit to Marajo Island (Ilha de Marajo) for a great view of the Amazon delta and a different kind of wilderness.
