How are the subways systems in Rio and Sao Paulo?

Well, I only know the subways in Sao Paulo, where I live. Everybody who went to New York tells me it's subways are ugly and dirty compared to Sao Paulo's subways. Here it's clean and reasonably beautyfull. It's not dangerous. I was never robbed at a subway (just try to stay alert and close to aparently good people and not carry valuable objects if possible).

The lines are not so complex as other cities aroud the world. Being Sao Paulo one of the biggest cities of the world it should have more subway stations. Depending on your destiny you will probably need to get a bus too. With one ticket you can use the subways and Bus for about 2 hours.

The subways are good and reasonably safe. At peak hours they are extremely crowded. Try to use them at non peak times.

They're awesome. I love both subway systems and have ridden extensively on both. I think in Rio, the subway system does a better job of covering the areas you'd wanna go to, but then again it's a much more compact city. Both systems are safe, modern, clean and cheap to ride. In Sao Paulo it covers a small portion of the city, but it's a good alternative to get around Old Downtown (Centro Velho) and Paulista Avenue, where most of the attractions are. In Rio, you can walk from certain subway stops in Copacabana to the beach, so it's very convinient.

I just can say about Sao Paulo. Subways are safe, just take care of your stuff. There is cameras in all stations. Avoid peak hours because it is really croweded, and try to stay in a hotel in Paulista area because from there you can take the subway to everywhere. Avoid buses they are not safe.

I can´t tell about the subways in Rio, but in São Paulo they´re just great. They are easy to use and also clean. Of course, at the rush time is crazy!! But it takes you anywhere you want to go. There´re 4 lines: green, blue, yellow and red. Just check the line you´re suppose to take on the board and......go! If you have to take 2 lines, it´ll cost you just one ticket. Buy the way, I think it´s something around R$ 2,50 what means Us$1.00. I don´t live in São Paulo but I use to go there very often. Have fun!
