Women kiss women on the cheeks.
Women and men kiss each other on the cheeks too and/or hand shake.
Men only shake hands with other men. If they are very close friends they may sometimes give a manly sort of hug or tap on the back.
Or you can just greet with a gentle nodding of the head.

In all these situations you can use the following phrases:
Oi, tudo bem? - Hi how are you?
Oi, prazer. - Pleased to meet you.
E aí, beleza? - if you already know the person and has really no translation for it in English, at least not one that makes sense (and there, beautiful?). It's a bit slang.

Now the tricky part: knowing how many kisses on the cheeks. It really depends on the region, but you always start by kissing right to right cheek (the french start with their left and that makes Brazilian-French kissing greeting very embarrassing! Accidently kissing on the lips of someone you've just met is hell of embarrassing).
Mostly go with the flow. I never really know if I kiss only once or twice because in my city we use both. Sometimes I go for the second kiss and the person is not waiting for it and that is a bit awkward, but happens. In some towns (or rare occasions) people even give three kisses! And as the saying goes - "três pra casar", meaning it's three kisses to give you luck in that you get married in the future. :-D

So in other words it's always polite to offer your hand for a hand shake, regardless if it's a man or a woman. If it's a women she may or may not bend for a kiss (since you'll probably feel very embarrassed to do so yourself. hehehe). Usually it's two and if you judge wrong the number of kisses, no need to feel awkward. :-)

Women kiss on the cheek.
A man kiss a woman on the cheek.
Men NEVER kiss other man on the cheek.

When it is a business meeting we shake hands. I live in Rio, so I can tell about Rio de Janeiro.

They say "oi tudo bem?" a lot. Men and women exchange a kiss on the cheek quite often too.

Be not concerned that you coming to Brazil won't be hug and kissed, we know that foreigners don't like effusive greets, the maximum that will do with you is shake your hand and to scrub the hand in your shoulder that is kindly sign.the greet formal are like this.

Now, passing for the area of the imbecile greets has several. none of them applied to foreigners.
1st - driving truck.
2nd - surfer
3rd - surfer with shark.
4th - baseball
