It will depend for which city you will travel.

SĂŁo Paulo is more refined city in the form of dressing.
Rio deJaneiro is a informal city, for being close to the beach.
The cities of the south where the temperature is lower they use more clothes.

They dress like you do in the states, i think, (it depends on how you dress) but pretty normal, they don´t seem to have the brand names as common here as they do there.

bring comfortable clothes, but don´t go shopping for a lot of new stuff before you leave, you will want to have money to buy clothes when you get here so you will blend in better.

make up is individual like back in the states, some families allow it, others don´t.

stay in touch with me if you like, I´m an american living in Rio- I´ll be here another year or two, and I was a foreign exchange student in HS to Portugal (1 year there), and in college to Russia and Mexico.

it depends on where are you going. It also depends on the time of the year.
In Sao Paulo & Rio you may find more fashion, still during summer they use light clothing and like using flip flops and opened shoes.

Of course it also depends on where are you going.
I believe is more like the american way of dressing specially in Sao Paulo. You may try to find videos in youtube of Brazilian soap operas "novelas" and check on how they dress, they stick to the normal day to day life, that's the best way you can see it.BTW you'll love it!

PS."SĂŁo Paulo is more refined city in the form of dressing"
Oh! My..Where, this? What place? É impressionante o que a mídia paulista faz...vende a imagem de São Paulo hipermetrópole do primeiro mundo e um monte de gente começa a enxergar uma distância abismal entre aquela cidade e as outras.

Girls there dress Femininene. They like to take the time to dress up to go anywhere. You don't see dressing large clothes or sandals.
