There are 2 tunnels, they both have pedestrian walkways and both tunnels are short, but it´s a bit tricky to walk them. Homeless people live there and muggings happen a lot.
As far as the distance goes, depends a lot on where you are in Botafogo and where you want to go in Copacabana. Both are large neighborhoods.
Bear in mind that Copacabana is not nice, the beach, even tough beautiful is not nice either.
Ipanema and Leblon are much nicer areas to go to the beach, shop, eat, etc... and they are also close by.
The subway, which is clean and safe in Rio has stations in both Botafogo and Copacabana, its fast and reliable.
As far as Carnival goes, the parade is the top attraction of course. The Carnival balls once were nice parties, nowadays its just very slimy and low.
Make sure you get tickets for the Carnival parade in a nice section, around the middle of the avenue, sector 9 if I think.
Also get a "Cadeira de Pista" or if you are comming with a group get a "Frisa" (holds 5 or 6 people). These are safe areas, very close, with waiter service, restrooms etc.
You don´t want to be stuck up in the "Arquibancadas", you can see well, but it´s very unconfortable.
enjoy! |

Less than four minutes by car, and less than five minutes by metro (subway). |

It wouldn't take long if you cross one of the two tunnels but I strongly advise you against that. Take a cab or the subway, it's so much better and not expensive. Those tunnels can be dangerous and you don't wanna risk to have something bad happening to you during this wonderful time called Carnival, right? ;) |

I can't remember the distance between Botafogo and Copacabana. During Carnival, if you see a plate of food, a glass of liquid or a bottle of alcohol and candles burning, stay away from them. Those items are part of a sacrifice to the spirits of a Macumba deity. Macumba is a religion similar to Voodoo, and it's practitioners can be found throughout Brasil. Macumbeiros do not take kindly to people who disturb or disrupt their ceremonies.
You might also want to hide your money, as pick pockets find Carnival to be an excellent time to catch turistas unaware, and relieve them of money, and jewelry. |
