How strict are they in Brazil on checking yellow fever vaccination requirements? ?

I will be traveling to Brasil by way of Colombia (just a layover), the embassy website requires vaccination for people having traveled in Colombia, but I wanted to know if anyone who has actually traveled to Brazil can tell me how necessary it is b/c I will not be in a high risk area (Sao Paulo) and would rather not spend the money on the vaccine and also hear it has bad side effects. Thanks for any help.

Well! I'm Brazilian and I think I can help you!
By the way, I live here.

The Yellow Fever is unfortunately a horrible illness. So my advice is that you are vaccinated when you being here. I know Sao Paulo is not a city with a Yellow Fever risk, but remember you are in tropical countries (Colombia/ Brazil) and you have to do this.
I think it's better you spend your money in your health now than you spend it in a hospital. What do you think?
I'm writing from Northeast of Brazil and all of us must be vaccinated. The Yellow Fever is not just in Amazon. It can be in any place that you think. I'm vaccinated and I can tell you: I didn't feel anything. Thanks to God I didn't have any side effects.

The true side effects are:

Around about 5% of the people can develop the side effects, 5-10 days after of the vaccination, symptom as fever, headache and muscular pain, being infrequent the happen of reactions in the application places. Hipersensibility reactions are very rares. The death facts are really rares. If the person was vaccinated and it's dead, you can be sure it couldn't be vaccinated because some reason.

Who can't be vaccinated:

* Kids with 4 months or less of age, because of the viral encefalit risk (it's really dangerous to vaccinate a kid with this age).
* Pregnant women, because of the possible risk of infection to the fetus.
* Pepople with immunity deficiencies results of illness or therapeutics.
* Allergic people to eggs, because the vaccince is preparated in embryonic eggs.
* Allergic people to eritromicyne, an antibiotic that it's part of the vaccine.
* Allergic people to jelly, because it's part of the vaccine.
* People with precedent of allergic reaction to anti-Yellow Fever previous dose.

The vaccine validility is until 10 years after the date that you've been vaccinated. Ok?

If you have more doubts or you want to know about Yellow Fever for sometihing more trustful, click in this link below. This is the Health Ministery of Brazil site. Everything is in English:

I hope I help you...
And Welcome to Brazil!

You would need a yellow fever certificate for sure. When going into Brazil, the first thing the immigration official asked me was where my plane departed from. I told him Leticia, Columbia, and he asked me for my Yellow Fever Certificate.
I took the vaccine, and didn't experienced any side effect. My girlfriend felt dizzy for a day, and that was it.

SUE
Wait, you might be at risk for catching Yellow Fever, and you don't want to protect yourself against it? Isn't that a bit too risky?

I think you should discuss this with your doctor. I'll bet they have a new vaccine that isn't as bad...at least they might..the doctor will know better.

Check with the doctor and the department of State or the equivalent in your country, Colombia and Brazil. You will surely get better information that way.

I traveled to Brazil and was not asked any questions about whether I'd been vaccinated. The problem is usually not about 'going into a country that has the disease' its in trying to 'come back to the usa, which does not have Yellow Fever and doesn't want to have someone bring it in.'

Although, I did not go to Columbia first so I would take the other guys advice and get it since they checked him b/c he was in Columbia first.
