Garden Guy

I'd like to go on holiday to Brazil...?

To Barra da Tijuca (West of Rio de Janeiro city but in the state), to be precise. I live in the United Kingdom and I've been a little nervous about the cost of the flight there. I've researched the area and it seems nice, but I haven't made any plans yet. Is there anything else I need to know about the area? Is English widely spoken or should I learn a little Portugese?

hi, Ron, hi Autum.
Well, first, Barra da Tijuca, well, not the best place to be in Rio as a tourist. It's a very difficult place to get around without a car. Long highways, lots of malls. I don't like it.
The beach there is very nice and clean, but other than that, only malls.
If I were you, I'd stay in Leblon, it's close to Ipanema, Copacabana, Botanial Gardens (a heighborhood and the actuall gardens), the lake Rodrigo de Freitas (an actual lake and also neighborhood).
I would check the RIO FLAT SERVICE as a hotel, it's good, not a real hotel, but sort of an apartment with services. There's a pool on top, breakfast included but not as many services as a regular hotel, price is good and location is the best. It's living room, bedroom, small kitchen thing, so you can make meals if you'd like.
If you need more info, let me know, my email link on yahoo is active.
Just a word of advice: do not rent cars in Rio.
Don't carry too much cash, credit and debit cards are very well-accepted (debit cards depending on your bank there)
ATM machines all over as well.
Take care, Denis

Be not concerned you will have the feeling that you is in Miami and you can speak in English because who lives in Barra da Tijuca would like even of being in the United States, They have his own Miss liberty.(the statue)
