What are you trying to say by that? That Brazil is unsafe? I find that very offensive. I was born in Brazil (Rio de Janeiro), but I've been living most of my life in the U.S. I always go visit my family in Brazil every year. And NEVER have I been assaulted or robbed. And don't say it's because I "look" Brazilian, because contrary to some stereotypes, not all Brazilians are dark skinned. I'm pale as hell and so are millions of others.

The only reason you'll get robbed is:
1. You look too much like a tourist
2. You're walking around wearing a lot of nice jewelry
3. You're driving around in a fancy car (fancy= Mercedes, BMW, etc.)
4. You're walking around with money visible (like if you're carrying it in your hand or if it's sticking out of you pocket)

As long as you're not stupid enough to do any of those four things, then it is very unlikely for you to get assaulted. And even if you do get assaulted, as long as you just cooperate and give the assaulter what he wants, you won't get hurt or anything. Now, if you start flailing, screaming, and starting a commotion, then yea you might. But that's not only the case for Rio, but for anywhere in the world.

Honestly, there's nothing to be scared of. I'm more scared walking by myself at night in the city i live in here in the U.S. because of all the sexual predators there are out there then of walking around at night in Rio, because there's always tons of people walking around on the sidewalk.

Living in fear is no way to visit anywhere in Brazil, much more effective than mace is a case of common sense. Don't go into the Favelas, invited or not, and don't travel alone at night. Most of the trouble you hear about is avoidable, and the people, even strangers tend to be very friendly and helpful.

I was born in Rio de Janeiro.. and live here until now. I love rio de janeiro very much. It is a nice city like any other in the world!
There are beautiful beaches, a very nice people who always like to help tourists. There are a lot of nature landscapes like tijuca's national park, sugar loaf, christ redeemer, beaches etc.. much more then that, you'll find a very nice nightlife at Lapa and the nightclubs at Ipanema and others nice neighborhoods, and the samba's schools and many other attractions. I hope you enjoy very much. I think that that's no problem to carry your cam with you. any tip or help you need.. you can contact me via e-mail. fabiosavassi@gmail.com
I hope you enjoy your travel!
have a nice trip and have fun.

put it in your baggage to be checked. I've been to rio de janeiro before and I would suggest not bringing anything expensive while walking around. Mase might help you, but the robbers there are very tricky, you wont have time to get the mase out. they grab and run. I just want to forwarn you because I got robbed walking around and they make sure they can grab and run with no incident. I dont want anything like that to happen to anyone again.
good luck and have fun, I'ts a great city!!

adrie
ya you can bring it just put it in a bag and let them know you have it, in Brazil they are very strict when it comes to what you can put in you bag due to some dumb asses who think they can smuggle drugs to the us.don't listen to whoever that girl is telling you not to go!! brazil is an amazing country and you will have lots of fun!! :) just make sure you don't go to places like the fa vela's cause its pretty dangerous, there's one in rio that I know of, the people are very poor and there is alot of gangs and drugs. I recommend you go to ipanema , leblon or niteroi. they have the best beaches and hotels

if you get a chance you should visit Pernambuco.i was born there in boa viagem ,recife.

Approximately the same size as continental United States, flights to Brazil are well served from North America, Europe and Asia. Here, ordinarily flights to Brazil that originate in North America, Europe or Asia frequently fly to Rio de Janeiro (the city famous for its carnival), Sao Paulo (the country's most populace city) and Brasilia (the capital). Cheap flights to Brazil, through all of these gateways, are also freely available.

Aside from these, both full-fare and cheap flights to Brazil arrive at two of Brazil's favorite other holiday destinations, Recife (a popular package tourist destination) and Manaus (located right in the heart of the Amazon basin).

Customs will cease your can of Pepper Spray.

Brazil, is a real shitty country. 90% of their population is in poverty. Stay home in the USA.Your better off and safer.

Please don't go to Brazil. I'm from there and I'm not recommend anyone that God forgotten place. Please don't go.

swinginwaltztime
Probably.

But more importantly, bring some condoms. There are a lot of hot brown, brazilian bubble butts down there!
