I've gonne through this process myself. We -my wife and I- are both Argentines, and we had two children here in Brazil, and we filed for a permanent residency visa based on our children being born in Brazil.
Basically, according to BR law being married with a Brazilian, having a Brazilian offpring, having Brazilian parents or reuniting with your Brazilian family (relatives) in the case of your parents death automatically qualifies you for a permanent resident visa.
However, you must take into account that the process could be a quite bureucratic one -as everything else in Brazil- and it could demand months or even years if you do not get the appropriate advice to navigate through the paperwork.
In my case, it took us 18 months to end this process. We first filed all the required paperwork at the Federal Policy inmigration department in Sao Paulo, and with that we got a temporary resident status as the paperwork moved through the process. For almost all purposes, this is like being a permanent resident. However, in my case as I have my own company, in order to be able to sign for the company I needed to get permanent residency or delegate the signature on a Brazilian fellow or associate. After waiting for more than a year -period of time we were told this process would take- we enter the Ministry of Justice and we tracked down the status of our process just to dicover that our file was classified as "supporting documentation incomplete" whereas in the first place it is ipossible to file a process if the mentioned documentation is incomplete.
After wasting some time, we decided to hire professional help to navigate through this bureucracy, and we hire the professional services of a company that does this para-legal services for multinational companies such as Nike, Unilever, Reckitt, etc. once we hire these people it took 5 days for our process to be published in the Journal of the Union with the legal approval of our permanent residency. Two months later we pick up our resident cards.
In summary, it would be highly advisable for you to hire the services of a firm like the one I used. It will save you precious time and money in navigating through the BR bureucracy. I paid R$ 1000 (aprox. USD 500) for their services in 2003. Be sure that you make clear to them that you are paying for their services, and that you are not sponsored by any company in order to get a better deal. It would be also wise that your childen's father negotiate with them since that way you would avoid to pay a "gringo" price -higher price cherged to forigners-.

He can bring you here and ask a permanent visa telling that want to tie family, isn´t difficult I think.
The ammount to do this is around 4000 dollars, find a lawyer office specialized on this question, they can guide you what to say and what to do.
